MIU KM (Minimum Investment Unit) is a unit used with submarine cables. For example: 1 MIU KM for SEA-ME-WE4 cable system can be defined as the Length of 1 kilometer of an STM-1 link along this cable.
Any telecommunication organization that joins in a submarine cable consortium is allocated a number of MIU kilometers for their ownership. The organization can then sell or lease this capacity and earn profit. Also they can use their capacity for their own purposes such as establishing bilateral voice, data, Internet, etc. links.
