[edit] Powerline's Retraction of Schiavo Memo - Substantiation?

El, You clipped a piece of Powerline's article re Hinderaker's retraction on their "Schiavo Memo" flub, claiming that it was unsubstantiated and POV.

Now, I'm sort of new to Wikipedia - but I'm a colleague of Hinderakers, and in fact they did retract their story "as soon as possible" - as in, as fast as they could write it.

Just curious - where's the POV? Mitchberg 10:12, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

It's unsubstantiated because, as of my revision, there was no demonstrable independent evidence supporting it.
First-person accounts (e.g., "I'm a colleague...") fall under the heading of "original research," and are not an acceptable Wikipedia encyclopedic standard. That's not my rule; it's Wikipedia's.[2]
While it's not horrendously POV, it does smack of POV damage control. "As soon as possible" can be construed as a post facto way of trying to burnish Power Line's reputation after it made a mistake. Your revision to "prompt" is more NPOV.
I don't wish to further stir the pot, but there's some question as to whether Power Line's "retraction" was a full retraction at all. Beginning with the querulous heading "Mystery Solved?" the entire "retraction" post is several miles short of a mea culpa, and is begrudging at best.
By the way, welcome to Wikipedia. As you've no doubt seen, any page dealing with a political figure (including bloggers and pundits) is sure to be... I think the best euphemism is "lively."

Eleemosynary 02:17, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blue eyed soul

Thank you for the great edits. Sorry if the rewrite wasn't up to standards, but I tried to take the article out of a hot mess. Antares33712 01:21, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Two-edged sword

Two-edged sword has been proposed for deletion. An editor felt this is more a dictionary entry than an encyclopedia article. Please review WP:WINAD for the relevant guidelines. I'm also not convinced that this is the actual meaning of this metaphor. Please provide sources for the information, to comply with WP:V. Please consider improving the article to address these concerns or explaining your plans on the talk page.

If no one objects to the deletion within five days by removing the prod notice, the article may be deleted without further discussion. NickelShoe 04:07, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandals

Hey. You left a message for help on my talk page, so here's the reply. Vandals are tiresome, aren't they? If you haven't yet found it, here's the place to look for help on dealing with these people: Wikipedia:Vandalism.

I see that another user has already blocked the vandal: User talk:Known Wikipedian. Hope this helps ! --jrleighton 00:40, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kuchen

I've heard "koogen" all over the state; In fact, I've never heard a "cha" or "ka" sound in the middle there. It might be different elsewhere, but for the most part all of North Dakota uses your pronunciation. --AlexWCovington (talk) 01:17, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MatthewUND's RfA

I just self-nominated myself for administrator's status on Wikipedia. As an active member of WikiProject North Dakota, I feel that having admin status would allow me the ability to be more useful to the project and to curtail vandalism and other problems. An admin is able to protect pages that are being bombarded with vandalism and to more quickly revert pages that have been vandalized. I've always hoped that we could get an admin to join the WikiProject so we would have someone to turn to in times of need. Since we still don't have an active admin within the project's membership, I decided to nominate myself. I really hope you will visit my request for adminship and support me. Thanks! --MatthewUND(talk) 10:47, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] State Capitol in North End

On January 5, 2007 you made a modification to the page 'St._Paul_neighborhoods' where you added the line: "The State Capitol is also at the southern edge of the neighborhood, between Cedar and Rice Streets on University Avenue." This is not true. The state capitol is located in the neighborhood 'Downtown', with 'Thomas-Dale' in between. Check out the following link: http://www.stpaul.gov/maps/citymap2.html I tried following the link you cited, but was unable to find where you got your information. I assume they meant that the Capitol is near the neighborhood. Jamie —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 172.134.226.207 (talk) 04:05, 29 April 2007 (UTC).

That might be true according to a surveyor's map, but the Capitol is literally across University from the North End, and is separated from any practical version of "downtown" by I94 and the Capital Mall north of Constitution; one must walk about 1/3 of a mile to get to "downtown" from the capitol, as opposed to crossing the street to get to the North End.

[edit] Senior Senator

Hey. I do not know you, but i see you are a member of North Dakota Wikiproject. Please, could you answer my question. I would like to point out that in 1992, Kent Conrad retired, and Byron Dorgan won. Dorgan is still in the Senate. And then Conrad ran and won a few years later. Wouldn't this make Dorgan senior senator from North Dakota??

Thanks,

-Assessments-
An intial round of assessments was recently done on all pages within the scope of WPND. These initial assessments...all 1,200+ of them...were done by MatthewUND. Matthew tried to generally follow the assessment guidelines found at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment.

To see the assessment of any North Dakota page, simply go to the page's talk page and check the WPND banner. The assessment is presented in a color-coded field in the WPND banner. To change an assessment, edit the page and change the word after "class=" in the WPND banner. Add one of the following codes:

Stub - for very small articles
Start - for slightly longer, higher quality articles
B - for high quality articles of an appropriate length
List - for lists
Cat - for categories
Template - for templates
NA - for pages that are not articles, templates, or categories

Any WPND member should feel free to change any page's assessment. However, keep in mind that there are assessments (particularly GA for "Good Article" or FA for "Featured Article") which can't be applied without having gone through a nomination process.

[edit] Notability of Captains Quarters (blog)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Captains Quarters (blog), by 69.218.227.214 (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Captains Quarters (blog) seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Captains Quarters (blog), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it did not nominate Captains Quarters (blog) itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 21:38, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

---North Dakota Portal---
Wikipedia now has a new portal devoted exclusively to the state of North Dakota. Check out Portal:North Dakota.

WPND member NDCompuGeek has constructed the initial framework for the portal and it should now be easy to update the portal on a month-by-month basis. The portal will serve as a kind of "front door" for people using Wikipedia to learn more about North Dakota. It is a great starting point for branching out into the many aspects of the state.

Each month a different article, picture, city, and biography will be showcased along with current news and happenings from around the state. The July version of the portal showcases the Mandan tribe, Governor John Hoeven, and the capital city of Bismarck.

Visit the portal's talk page to share your opinions and ideas regarding the portal.

News
---Grand Forks now a Featured Article---
Grand Forks, North Dakota was recently designated as a Featured Article. This means that the article has gone through a nomination process in which it was reviewed and its quality was assessed. The fact that this article made it through the process shows that it is a high quality, well-written, well-sourced article. Currently, there are only a little over 1,500 Featured Articles in the almost two million articles on the English language Wikipedia. That means that only about one in 1,270 articles has been given this designation.

The Grand Forks article is a great example to follow when working on other city articles, particularly those about North Dakota cities. We would be very well off if our other major city articles were similar to the Grand Forks article. Keep the Grand Forks article bookmarked and refer to its structure and style when you work on similar articles.

---New assessment parameter---
You're likely aware that all WPND articles now include a quality rating located on the article's talk page. Now, a new assessment parameter is being implemented. The importance rating aims to gauge the "importance" of the article's subject as it relates to North Dakota. As an example, Bismarck, North Dakota would not be considered as being very important in relation to the country or the world, but it is of top importance when considering just the state of North Dakota.

The importance of each article is gauged as either Top, High, Mid, or Low. Since "importance" is a rather subjective term, some WPND members are trying to come up with a general set of guidelines. Check out this thread on the WPND talk page to see proposals and to share your own opinions of what is and isn't "important" in the state.

Please help to improve and expand these articles which were recently added to the WPND project:
Cities Area Transit | Dakota Territory Air Museum | Fight On Sioux | Fort Totten State Historic Site | Grand Forks Chiefs | It's For You, North Dakota U | List of people from Grand Forks, North Dakota | Log Cabin Museum, Sheyenne, ND | McKenzie Electric Cooperative | North Dakota Democratic-Independent Party | North Dakota Railroad Commission | North Dakota State Cabinet | Old Main (Minot State University-Bottineau) | Pembina State Museum | Politics of North Dakota | Ruth Meiers Hospitality House | Spirit Lake Casino | Stand Up and Cheer (song) | Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation | UND Alma Mater

---North Dakota articles on Main Page---
This past month, two new North Dakota-related articles appeared in the Main Page's "Did you know?" section. The articles were Zip to Zap and Climate of North Dakota. Congratulations to the creators of these articles — it's always exciting to see North Dakota articles on Wikipedia's Main Page. A request has also recently been made to make Grand Forks, North Dakota a Featured Article of the day.

---Active members and inactive members---
In an effort to more accurately gauge just how large WPND is, the WPND members list has been split into an active and inactive list. WPND member MatthewUND (talk · contribs) was recently promoted to Administrator status. That means that he has been granted the use of special tools so he can take care of housekeeping tasks such as blocking disruptive users, protecting pages, deleting pages, and quickly reverting edits to pages. It has been mentioned in the past that WPND was in need of an administrator. With MatthewUND's promotion, that is now a reality. News
---Article deletions---
A series of deletions of North Dakota articles this past month is a good reminder that we need to be careful when creating new articles. Before creating any article, it is a good idea to 1) check out Wikipedia:Notability to see if the subject deserves an article and 2) make sure that worthwhile sources can be found pertaining to the subject and are effectively used to cite the article. Often, instead of simply creating a brand new stub article for a subject, it is a good idea to expand an existing article that in some way can address the subject.

---Peer reviews---
The University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University articles are currently up for peer review. Please take a moment to visit UND's peer review and NDSU's peer review. Read through the articles and then share your opinions of where the articles currently stand and how they might be improved. Peer review is often a step in the process of getting articles to Good Article or Featured Article status. As a WikiProject, we are very much in need of more GA or FA class articles.

Housekeeping
---Mandan demoted---
After a review, the Mandan tribe article is no longer considered Featured Article class. This is a reminder that even after articles have made it all the way to FA class, it is always possible for them to lose that designation. This also means that WPND is down to one FA class article.

[edit] Northern Alliance Radio Network -- not notable?

Hi. I'm not sure this article's subject is notable -- please take a look at the talk page discussion of this. I could not find any references that satisfy the fairly specific source requirements of the Notability Guideline. Have you got anything else? If not, the article should be deleted or perhaps merged into another article such as WWTC. Thanks, --A. B. (talk) 15:20, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

---UND article upgraded---
The University of North Dakota article was recently upgraded to "good article" status. This brings WPND up to two good articles and one featured article. We should work on bringing other North Dakota articles up to a higher status. Look in Category:Top-importance North Dakota articles for articles to work on improving. It would be great to get the main North Dakota article to GA or FA class in the near future. There are also a number of other articles which are close to GA status already...a little work will make them ready for that designation.

---Assessing article importance---
Work continues on assessing the "importance" of all articles that fall under the banner of WPND. Currently, around a third of all articles have been rated for importance.

---A new "Good Article"---
WPND now has another new good article: 1997 Red River Flood in the United States. This article was recently split off from the 1997 Red River Flood article. Much of the credit for this article's promotion should go to Nehrams2020 (talk · contribs).

---Let's improve our main article---
For a WikiProject whose focus is the state of North Dakota, there is likely no article that should be more important to us than the North Dakota article itself. We should work on improving this article to at the very least good article status and ideally featured article status.

---UND on the Main Page?---
The University of North Dakota article is currently listed as a good article. Given UND's 125th anniversary ([3]), perhaps we should think about improving this article to featured status so it could potentially be the article of the day in February when the event is officially observed.
