Mitra carbonaria is a medium-large species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Mitridae, the miter snails or miter shells.

[edit] Distribution
This miter snail is endemic to Australia and New Zealand. It is found around southern Australia, including Tasmania, the Kermadec Islands, and is found rarely in the northern half of the North Island of New Zealand.

This species is found in sandy rocky areas from low tide down to depths of a few metres.
[edit] Shell description
The shell of this species is moderately large, elongate-fusiform, smooth, with a chocolate-brown shell.
The shell height is up to 64 mm, and width up to 20 mm.
