Mitchell County (standard abbreviation: MC) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas. In 2000, its population was 6,932. The largest city and county seat is Beloit.

Following amendment to the Kansas Constitution in 1986, the county remained a prohibition, or "dry", county until 1996, when voters approved the sale of alcoholic liquor by the individual drink with a 30% food sales requirement.[1]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 719 square miles (1,861 km²), of which, 700 square miles (1,813 km²) of it is land and 19 square miles (49 km²) of it (2.62%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 6,932 people, 2,850 households, and 1,863 families residing in the county. The population density was 10 people per square mile (4/km²). There were 3,340 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.61% White, 0.52% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 2,850 households out of which 27.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% were married couples living together, 5.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.60% were non-families. 31.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 22.50% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 21.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $33,385, and the median income for a family was $41,899. Males had a median income of $26,478 versus $20,220 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,653. About 6.50% of families and 9.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.50% of those under age 18 and 7.20% of those age 65 or over.
