Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:New user log

The result of the debate was mark as historical. It's a bit of a stretch to say that there is consensus to keep this page, but there isn't a consensus to delete it here, given its possible archival value. Everyone agrees, however, that the page is obsolete. Xoloz (talk) 16:39, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia:New user log
This page seems to be redundant to other pages such as Adopt a User, Help Desk etc. It consists of new users leaving a message, but for what purpose? I count two responses to dozens of messages, and frankly it seems the page is inactive to the regulars here. I suppose new users go there because it is linked in a welcome message. I think it should be deleted, or at least marked as historical. Thanks. Redrocketboy 00:44, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep I may be biased, but I've used that page in the past to welcome users who have gone on to be successful contributors. They may not get responses on the page itself, but they usually get them on their talk page. I guess you could say that the New user log does the job alright, but this one is usually used by those who are more eager to get to know Wikipedia. - Delete (without prejudice) There seems to be two factions on WP, those who believe in nurturing a community atmosphere {see Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Images of Wikipedians (2nd nomination)), and those who believe in encouraging a professional environment focused on improving the encyclopedia. I am of the latter, so I see no purpose for a message board for newbies.--12 Noon 08:38, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Delete, Wikipedia isn't a message board, and we should be encouraging new users to contribute to the encyclopedia. --Coredesat 12:32, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- See my comment below. Acalamari 17:38, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Delete, or at least make it orphaned and historical. I never knew about this page, and I don't think it does much to help new users. Shalom (Hello • Peace) 16:28, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Strong keep or at least mark as historical I used this page when I was a new user, and actually found it as encouragement to edit more. As Coredesat said above, "we should be encouraging new users to contribute to the encyclopedia", and that is what this page did with me. So yes, despite what the above says, it does help new users. - Wikipedia:Editors matter might be a good read too. Acalamari 17:38, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Delete, not needed any more. There are other pages just like this--Phoenix-wiki talk · contribs 20:06, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep or mark as historical. A part of Wikipedia's history. --Carnildo (talk) 08:48, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- Delete It was a great page for newcomers, but adoption and using the {{helpme}} tags (assuming their {{welcome}}) makes this page obsolete/useless. PrestonH 03:59, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- If people (Acalamari, Master of Puppets, the newbies MoP greets) find it useful when greeting newbies and encouraging them to contirubte, then I think that it should be kept. --Iamunknown 04:14, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:NOT#FORUM. As noted above, other pages and processes have since replaced the function of this page. Also, though it may be unintentional due to the nature of the page, some of the entries essentially constitute advertisement for a person, product, or company. - If it's redundant, then tag as historical: it's been around since February 2004, so it's history. With advertising, if the page is kept for historical reasons, it can be protected if necessary. Acalamari 21:56, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

- I only support tagging pages as "historical" when they clearly have some historical value (e.g. a proposed policy that failed to gain consensus); I can see little use in preserving history for the sake of it being history. – Black Falcon (Talk) 22:03, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- I wasn't previously aware of this page's existence, and it's kind of redundant to {{helpme}}, so delete. –Crazytales talk/desk 18:49, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep and mark as historical Although I did not know that this page existed before, I can see that it is an important part of Wikipedia's history. Possibly could also add links from the page to Adopt-a-user and such. Midorihana(talk)(contribs) 02:26, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
