[edit] Wikipedia:Macron
Non-Wikipedia related how-to. MER-C 07:11, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- Macrons are used in Wikipedia articles. Dificulty in typing macrons is a complaint used against the cause of using of macrons in Wikipedia articles. People writing Wikipedia articles might like to know how the can type a macroned character so they wont have to look up the charater they wish to type then copy and paste it into the articles they are editing. Also, the article was just created. Right now it only deals with how to type macrons, but if you look you will see that it is just on section of the article. More sections can be added later. I would have out this in an existing article, but I couldn'y seem to find a place it would fit. A how-to does not seem appropriate for the macron article in the main namespace of Wikipedia. Anyway, the how-to is currently the only part of the article, but the name of the article is Wikipedia:Macron, not Wikipedia:How to type macroned characters, so other kinds of info could be added. I thought it would be nice if the article started by explaining why macrons are used in article titles on Wikipedia. I would be interested in knowing why they are used. Would this type of information be acceptable anywhere on Wikipedia? Jecowa 07:43, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Delete as every edit box on Wikipedia has a box below it containing pretty much every macronned character (if not all of them) in the Latin alphabet. There's no need for an entire page to explain whhat's there anytime someone edits a page. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 07:56, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Changed, see below.
- The little buttons to insert the macroned letters in the special characters section is very hard to find. I'm only just now finding them. I looked for them before, but I looked over them and didn't see them. It is not very pleasant scrolling down to the special characters section and looking for the character you need every time you wish to use one. Also the text is very small down there and hard to tell exactly which markings are above the letters. Jecowa 08:14, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- They are the same size as the letters in the edit box itself. If the text is too small, you can always make the text on the page bigger by fiddling with the settings in your browser's View menu. Depending on your settings, you might even be able to make the text bigger by holding down the Ctrl key and scrolling with your mouse scroll wheel. You make the characters smaller again by scrolling the opposiote direction. I guess I just know where the macronned characters I use all the time are located in the list. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 08:21, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- The macroned letters in the input area don't have any space between the macron and the letter. This makes them hard to identify since the macron is not very distinct. Even if I know how to make the characters bigger on the browser, there's still a very large number of characters to search through to find the ones I need. It's not very pleasant to have to click letters to enter a letter when you could type it like any other character. It would be nice if there was a page on Wikipedia that explained why macrons are used over official names and most commonly used names because it is hard to find someone that will explain it. If there was a page containing that information, people wanting to know why could be directed to it. This way this complicated issue would only need to be explained only one time. - Actually, when I look in the HTML source, there is a <small> tag around the table. It makes üūúű a little more difficult to discern. Also, the base font may be different (helvetica-like) versus the input box (courier-like). (This is in Firefox on OSX; YMMV). Having said that, this info is useful, but it is probably better off in a chapter of http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Tiger and a similar book for other OS's. And, the table is not complete. ® (option-r in OSX) © (option-g) and ™ (option-2) among others are missing, but maybe that says more about our community's opinion of those things, than any prejudice against the characters in particular. :-) Neier 09:12, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

- Mediawiki's default macroned alphabet insertation utility based on JavaScript cannot be accessible from JS-disable browsers, so tips for inserting macrons are useful for such other Wikipedians. --Masao 10:04, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- Move to Help namespace and expand - this could be useful if it was linked to Help:Special characters article, but needs finishing off. Yomanganitalk 13:01, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- Move as per Yomangani above. A lot of us guys allegedly never read the rules in advance anyway, and many won't be familiar enough to go down and look for the special characters, or just page down without looking at the special character box. It would need expansion to be really useful, though. Badbilltucker 13:29, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- Move as per above. Very useful for those of us who can't use the characterbox. Grutness...wha? 23:25, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
