The result of the debate was Speedy Keep per WP:SNOW. The userbox migration to userspace effort gives a wide latitude for pages like this. — xaosflux Talk 04:35, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] User:UBX/girlfriendwish
Straightforward violation of WP:NOT#SOCIALNET, "Wikipedia is not an appropriate place to advertise your desire for relationships". Eyrian 20:22, 22 August 2007 (UTC) Withdraw, I've changed the appropriate policy. --Eyrian 17:37, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep, totally harmless. I have it on my userpage for fun and lightheartedness with no actual intentions or expectations of 'snagging a girlfriend' here. Best, --Le Grand Roi des CitrouillesTally-ho! 23:32, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep, no harm being done, it's in user space, doesn't take up much disk space. - Crockspot 00:35, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- So, is the policy simply wrong? Should it be rescinded? The two are in direct contradiction. Either Wikipedia can be a place to advertise a desire for a relationship, or it is not. --Eyrian 01:14, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- It is disputed that the purpose of this userbox is to advertise a desire for a relationship. (See Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles's comments.) GracenotesT § 02:26, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- This userbox declares that the user desires a relationship. How is that not precisely the same thing? "It might not work" isn't sufficient. --Eyrian 03:36, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Eh. I still see somewhat of a fine line, given that there is a difference between an idle desire and an invitation to social engagement. This userbox is not something I'm concerned about, honestly. Possible WP:NOT violations are usually something that should be resolved as soon as possible, but in this case, there's not much cause for alarm. GracenotesT § 04:23, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

- Keep!!!!: What's wrong having userboxes introducing yourself!? If you think that it should be deleted just because this is not a socialnet, then I think there will be many many more userboxes to be removed! --Edmund the King of the Woods! 06:16, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Neutral: I was under the impression that Jimbo had indicated that user-space templates were to be squashed only if they were blatantly offensive, aggressively polemical, or purely spam. Since I'm not certain, I'm withholding my decision for now. What I am entirely certain of is that there's way too much WP:ILIKEIT flying around this discussion. - Delete, editors are not allowed to have a social life, it detracts from the encyclopedia building which is the Most Important Thing Ever. for the humor-impaired, no I am not being serious >Radiant< 07:26, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep As Radiant wisely points out above, the purpose of this userbox is not really social engagement, but light humor. In response to Eyrian's observation that this interpretation would imply that the box means something other than what it explicitly says, I remind Eyrian that irony is common in humor. Anyone who believes that a userbox alone will attract a mate to himself is pitifully mistaken. I assume good faith (and intelligence), and imagine most users would have humor in mind as they use the box. Xoloz 10:31, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - read the line that comes directly after the one you quoted: "User pages that move beyond broad expressions of sexual preference are unacceptable." There you go: it's fine; just a userbox. It's not like it's soliciting people to ask them out. - Koweja 12:52, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep. "I wish I had a girlfriend" is substantially different from "l00kin f0r gf messge m3 pl0x!" The latter is what the policy against advertising desire for relationships is intended to prevent. -Amarkov moo! 15:27, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep harmless. Sasha Callahan 17:25, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep seems fine to me. It's not disruptive or annoying. Acalamari 17:32, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep its perfectly harmless --Teriyakimoto 19:21, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep I see nothing disruptive here.--PrestonH 22:01, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - It's not harming anything, and as Radiant says, it's light humor, not serious. I highly doubt that someone would, say, ask me out because I've got a "This user is looking for a boyfriend" userbox. Neranei (talk) 23:24, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - its harmless, i don't have it in my user page but i'm ok with keeping it Neoarchon Talk 23:34, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
