[edit] User:UBX/MLB-Yankee Hater
Hateful userbox. Might be a speedy delete under WP:CSD#G10. Otterathome (talk) 10:35, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Keep It's a popular expression (apparently used by Red Sox followers?), see coverage on ESPN in this article and Las Vegas Sun's coverage on this other article, and usage by ESPN as a general term [1][2] --Enric Naval (talk) 14:03, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- How does that make it acceptable?--Otterathome (talk) 14:45, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- It shows that it's not a random expression invented by an editor to express hate, but an accepted expression used several times by a major sports network with no problem --Enric Naval (talk) 17:41, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- So just because it is said elsewhere, that makes it acceptable here?--Otterathome (talk) 17:51, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- It's used several times on a major sports network. I think we can assume that the term is acceptable on the sports world. Since it's a statement about a sports team, I think that the usage by ESPN can be used as a guide of it being hateful or not. --Enric Naval (talk) 19:23, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Notice that there is also merchandising with the term, and it's always associated with sport teams (store.chowdaheadz.com/yahaha.html) The Original Yankee Hater Hats (www.wackyplanet.com/yankeehaterhat.html) Yankee Hater hat. Even the most extreme examples of merchandising that could actually be interpreted as hate against north-americans are still associated with "Boston Baseball Gear" (www.cafepress.com/lovemysox/1409023) Yankee Hater Gear, and, given the typefaces and colors being used, they can probably be recognized easily by north-americans as making reference to NYY sport team. --Enric Naval (talk) 19:50, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

- Keep To say one "hates" a sports team is closer to saying "I hate peas" then it is to being a true attack.--Cube lurker (talk) 18:56, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Delete Even though the link is piped to the New York Yankees, the word Yankee is often used to refer to US residents in general. The userbox could thus be interpreted by some people as "This user hates Americans". Furthermore, I didn't knew this but the article says so, some apparently see yank or yankee as a particularly offensive word. - Face 19:30, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- The people who would be offended by this, Americans, wouldn't be offended. Most Americans know what these Yankees mean. Mm40|Talk|Sign|Review 19:38, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Not only the link brings to the sports team, but the letters on the image are also the acronym of that same team. Like Mm40 says above, it's difficult to imagine any actual citizen of the US getting confused over the meaning of this userbox. --Enric Naval (talk) 19:42, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- keep I am a Yankee fan and I feel absolutely not offended (sorry for the grammar). This doesn't violate WP:CIVIL. Mm40|Talk|Sign|Review 19:38, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Keep Anyone who'd be offended by this would have fainted as some point long before they reached Wikipedia — iridescent 20:23, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Keep - Note that the userbox designer did not say "This user hates Yankee fans.--WaltCip (talk) 20:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)" So, I think this userbox is practically harmless.--WaltCip (talk) 20:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Keep, not polemical, as explained above. It's actually a mild term equivalent in magnitude to saying "I'm a Yankee fan." Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 11:38, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
- Keep if it said "This user hates members of the Yankees" or "This user hates Yankee fans", then it would be a problem. Hating a team isn't the same thing by a long shot. Between the link, the acronym, and the box name, I doubt anybody is going to think it's about all Americans. - Koweja (talk) 15:18, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
- Keep It's a pretty famously used phrase. And besides, there are several other userboxes that say "This user hates the Red Sox..." (or any other team) Milk’s Favorite Cookie (Talk) 21:35, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- Keep it is hardly offensive. Monobi (talk) 16:50, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
