Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:ProfL
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the miscellany page below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the page's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this page.
The result of the debate was Delete. All unsigned, anon., and WP:SPA comments ignored. Having one's friends or students deluge the debate with comments that merely represent an obvious personal bias will never work, and actually damages the reputability of one's cause. [edit] User:ProfL
Appears to be a personal web page of a college professor. Wikipedia is not a free web host. User has made virtually no contributions outside of user page. [1] Khatru2 22:43, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- Regarding deletion of my User Page (an open letter from ProfL) I'm beginning to twig on to why my page is contoversial, but I think we need to come to an agreement about the guidelines as to whether a userpage "is for anything that is compatible with the Wikipedia project." The guidelines as interpreted by the pro-deleter camp is a tad rigid, imho. For instance, I wasn't aware that User Pages are only for Editors that contribute on a regular basis. I am not clear as to what the Wikipedia Project is if it doesn't include users like me. As an avid "user", I decided to "use" my page for this purpose, perhaps in error, but I thought the exposure to students was a key factor in "building" Wikipedia. On a proactive note, I'd like to pare down the college specific links and rework the Wiki content to my course outlines only, which integrate to the Wipedia content. It seems as if that would be within the guidelines, but total deletion seems unduly harsh. In any case, I am waiting for the final word from the discussion and then I can surely adapt my page to suit the decision that is made. Also, if I could get a fix on the contribution aspect, I could certainly devote more time to editing other pages too. I am actually quite perplexed that this all matters to anyone! It's just a few k out in cyberspace, working hard to keep the information flowing! I look forward to a fair response from the editors. ProfL 22:43, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- Delete - I counted a total of 5 edits to anything other than his user or talk page. I know that he might be very busy in real life, but that is still completely disproportionage attention to his userpage. Badbilltucker 22:57, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- Delete and out of those 5, there were only two distinct pages. "Wikipedia is not a free webhost." Dar-Ape 01:06, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- Keep Yes I am a professor and thought it was a good idea to use my User Page as an e-info portal because it is integrated into Wikipedia for definitions of our subject matter. I didn't think that was in violation because I am promoting the use of Wikipedia for college students. There is no "webhosting" going on as the links go to documents stored on my own website. I hope you all reconsider this decision as my page is a very popular jumping--off point. -ProfL
- Question Is there a minimum quota for overall edits? I have made minor edits on pages related to my subject matter and research. -ProfL
- Delete Looks like a clear case of free web-hosting. Sandy (Talk) 13:49, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep I USE wikipedia all day long. I am a wiki USER. This is my USER PAGE, which is integrated into Wikipedia's content. -ProfL
- Keep This page introduced me to wiki which is now the top link i use on my computer, without ProfL's page, I would still be in the dark to wikipedia! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 137.36.65.53 (talk • contribs) 15:43, 1 November 2006.
- Keep This is a great page to explore some of the classes that Suny Cobleskill offers, besides, why shut down a site that benifits college students in the class room. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 137.36.19.10 (talk • contribs) 15:59, 1 November 2006.
- Keep I am a student of Prof L. and her page introduced me to Wikipedia and I now use Wikipedia all the time. The page is a great learning device and it would be a shame to get rid of it —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 137.36.19.10 (talk • contribs) 16:09, 1 November 2006.
- Keep the page, ProfL really helps us with this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 137.36.19.10 (talk • contribs) 17:19, 1 November 2006.
- Delete. This looks like it is being used to provide syllabi for ProfL's classes. Wikipedia is not a free web host; surely ProfL's college can provide her with a free web page on its web site for that purpose. --Metropolitan90 17:21, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep To Metropolitan90: Of course the college can provide a web site page. I could also post it on my own website. I teach Web Design! However none of those options would entail an integration to Wikipedia's content. The "delete" people are missing this point. This is not an article. It is my User Page. -Prof L
- Please take a look at the guidelines for user pages, specifically these sections:
- "Your userpage is for anything that is compatible with the Wikipedia project. It is a mistake to think of it as a homepage: Wikipedia is not a free host, webspace provider, or social networking site. Instead, think of it as a way of organizing the work that you are doing on the articles in Wikipedia, and also a way of helping other editors to understand with whom they're working."
- "Generally, you should avoid substantial content on your user page that is unrelated to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a general hosting service, so your user page is not a personal homepage. Your page is about you as a Wikipedian."
- It does not appear that anything on your user page pertains to the Wikipedia project, and you haven't made any significant edits to the encyclopedia. Your user page is mostly about course descriptions and events happening at your college. Perhaps you should consider hosting this content yourself with links to Wikipedia. We certainly appreciate your interest in Wikipedia and are glad that it is being used for educational purposes. We would also be happy for you to become a regular contributor to the encyclopedia. However, this content is simply inappropriate for the project. I don't understand your need to be "integrated within Wikipedia." Also, to keep things simple, please vote only once so that there is a clear idea of consensus. Thanks. Khatru2 21:54, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep I am a Two Year studen of Prof L, and I believe this page is a great way of keeping up to date with the class assignments. It is a great for us as the students and easier for us to learn in class. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 137.36.202.79 (talk • contribs) 18:28, 1 November 2006.
- Keep Prof L's page is helpful to students and utilizes other aspects of this site for educational purposes thus giving wikipedia more exposure, and helping college students learn, it should be kept. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 137.141.235.114 (talk • contribs) 18:37, 1 November 2006.
- Keep This user page is a perfect one to be used as a jump off point for those that are unfamiliar with the site. I have seen it used to spark imagination and to quench knowledge. This page should not be deleted. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 169.226.84.213 (talk • contribs) 20:10, 1 November 2006.
- KeepI am ProfL's student and her wiki page introduced me to wikipedia. Why get rid of a user page that is bringing other users to the website? 137.36.65.53 20:35, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Mackeyml
- Keep The way the page works with the overall site cannot be considered "personal" or "webhosting". There is no "agenda" here other than to share knowledge and introduce a new generation of students to Wikipedia--future Wikipedians I might add. Why is Khatru2 policing ProfL's page? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.33.215.127 (talk • contribs) 21:25, 1 November 2006.
- Keep Who ever the person is has nothing better to do than both a professor from college i like this website its convienient for all of us as professor Lauber did this for us AS STUDENTS she didnt hav to make it she wanted to so she can hlep us out so we dont have to go jumping from website to website... dont delete her KEEP HER PAGE! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 137.36.19.10 (talk • contribs) 00:58, 2 November 2006.
- Keep Being a person who loves Wikipedia, I feel that this web page is a service to all students, whether college or high school. Having a professor be able to help her students is a great service to students everywhere.Orfannkyl 03:30, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- Keep This is a great way to really dive into wiki, and the deletion of this site, would mean the first domino to fall into a series of other deletions. Why? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 137.36.202.85 (talk • contribs) 18:57, 2 November 2006.
- Delete. Nothing here that relates to Wikipedia. — Arthur Rubin | (talk) 20:42, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- The current contents of the page are well beyond the acceptable standards which are described in WP:USER. If the user begins actively contributing to the project and edits the page down to a reasonable level, there is not necessarily a need to delete the page's history. However, if the user continues to ignore Wikipedia's stated policy and established standards, the only choice may be to delete the page. Wikipedia is not a free webhost. Rossami (talk) 23:57, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- Delete. The idea of the page being a blog is overshadowed by the fact that the user has made very few contributions other than those relating to his user page (user page, talk page, MfD discussion). Delete. SupaStarGirl 22:16, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
