[edit] User:JohnnyMrNinja/Lame password
- This debate was originally started at TFD, and has been moved to MFD, its appropriate deletion forum. All discussion before my timestamp took place on the TFD entry. Sebi [talk] 09:27, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Whoa, I'd like to ask you something. Do we need a userbox that says "yeah I have a crappy password that you could probably guess, but just because it's weak don't try it!" That's just asking for trouble. Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 03:12, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- ? I can't tell if this is serious... it seems serious but it can't be. Did someone really put something in my userspace up for TfD because they thought using it was unsafe? 1)MfD is the place for that 2)I think there should be a valid reason to delete someone's userspace 3)it's so obviously a joke it scares me that someone could not see that. It pisses me off that I have to defend my userspace from my phone on a saturday night. At least leave a message on my talkpage before this if no disrespect is meant. ~ JohnnyMrNinja 06:05, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Dude, I did notify you. [1] Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 02:31, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Nicely ask him to {{db-userreq}} it. Probably not the best idea for a userbox ever, but if we can get this dealt with by asking, rather than forcing, it'll be better all around. --tjstrf talk 09:41, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep. Either a joke, or a fairly stupid idea, but it isn't detrimental to the encyclopedia, only potentially to the user themselves (if their account gets hacked by a vandal, they will be blocked). I advise the user to db-userreq it, as suggested above, but I see no reason why the community should intervene on this. WaltonOne 13:35, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep a pretty dumb thing to stick on your userpage, but I can't think of anything that's actually wrong with it. If his account gets hacked that's his problem. Hut 8.5 14:34, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Delete if it's not meant sarcastically it's obviously inappropriate for WP:BEANS and WP:DNFT reasons; if it's meant sarcastically it's not funny, confusing and inappropriate on a Wikipedia user page. Melsaran (talk) 17:19, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:BEANS. Cheers, Lights 19:26, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep. Not very clever perhaps, but it's in user space and only potentially harmfull to those who wish to use it. If the user who created it wants it deleted, then let them decide for themselves. PC78 20:48, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- Comment I'd like everyone here to put themselves in the mind of a hacker. Then you see this userbox. Wouldn't you target these people? I know a I definatley would. Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 02:29, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - From a hacker's point of view, the massive collection of userboxes any given person has would probably prove a more fruitful way to hack their passwords than an obviously joke template. --Haemo 02:36, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:BEANS. If we can avoid trouble and possible account compromises, then we should stick to it. bibliomaniac15 Two years of trouble and general madness 02:54, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep. We don't need to protect Wikipedians like they're children. Nominating jokes like this is a poorer idea than the userbox itself.--Father Goose 06:16, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Weak Delete. Per WP:BEANS, we do need to treat Wikipedias like children; many of us are children. Weak cos I'm not sure this presents a real danger, or that "joke" userboxes are in principle such a problem. / edg ☺ ★ 10:01, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Comment. Can I just point out to everyone citing WP:BEANS that it is only an essay, and as such "editors are not bound by its advice". PC78 14:43, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, but instead of repeating why spilling the beans is a bad idea, it is much easier to refer to the essay. Melsaran (talk) 14:44, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- What I meant was that since there is no guideline or policy against something like this, then there is no compelling reason to get rid of it, and the various calls here to delete tend to smack of WP:ITBOTHERSME. We shouldn't be nannying other users like this by deciding for them what is or isn't a "good idea" PC78 06:47, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

- Comment I'd like to ask something: What happens if a guy DOES hack an account that has the userbox? It'd be too late then. Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 18:40, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Then the editor who used the box will feel stupid, and no harm will come to Wikipedia that couldn't happen via any account.--Father Goose 02:38, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Comment it seems to be assumed that the box indicates that the user does in fact have a weak password, which may not be the case. 19:10, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep A dumb idea for a userbox, but it really doesn't need to be deleted. Captain panda 20:16, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- keep - this is in userspace, for user pages, it is being used, and it violates no guideline or policy, so what is the problem? it is a joke off the boxes that say "this user has a strong password". I actually have a good password, its "justin4eva" (after justin timberlake) so don't worry about me. I cannot participate in this discussion any further due to a combination of my phone and moving, but I will be keeping a watchful eye. ~ JohnnyMrNinja 20:59, 10 September 2007 (UTC) Copied here by request due to problems with an internet connection. - Look, I edited your comment because I though you were serious about your password, I was only trying to help. Please don't be rude about it, because I did no harm. Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 02:56, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep Don't know which is lamer (more lame?) that user box or this nomination. Can I nominate this thread for deletion as well?

It is not really "Communications with people uninvolved with the project or related work" or "material that is likely to bring the project into disrepute, or which is likely to give widespread offense." Does not violate Wikipedia:Userboxes. Is is not really incivility, personal attacks, inflammatory, divisive, propaganda, advocacy, recruitment of any kind, commercial, political, religious, opinion pieces on current affairs or politics, self-promotion, or advertising. The only negative outcome would be to JohnnyMrNinja in that JohnnyMrNinja would be banned if his account is compromised. -- Jreferee (Talk) 21:53, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- That's the comment of the page right there. Wikipedia faces no harm from this userbox, just individual users, and then only if they're doubly stupid and actually have a truly lame password. This moral panic of an MfD is more harmful to Wikipedia than the userbox itself.--Father Goose 02:50, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep per Jreferee & Father Goose. If someone wants to announce they have a lame password, that's their business. I'll even go out on a limb though and say that even a child would not create an easy password and then put this userbox on their page. It's purely a joke, and I seriously doubt anyone would ever use it in any serious way. Anyone smart enough to recognize that their password is lame will also have the common sense not to announce it.
- Keep I do not have anything against humorous userboxes. If his account gets hacked, then it is his fault.--SJP 22:55, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - Oh come on, if his account does get hacked, it's his fault for advertising. This is merging on WP:BEANS, but he might learn a valuable lesson that way ;) Besides, I'm guessing Johnny's password is harder to crack then mine. Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 23:46, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
