University of Dayton

Hi! Apparently you deleted my addition to the Christmas on Campus section of the University of Dayton page because of copywrite issues. If I wrote it and took it through the printing process, it does not have a copyright because I never got one for it as the person who commissioned it and wrote it and I want to share it without having it deleted by you or someone like you... What should I do.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Dayton

Thanks, Kate Kate@morainecountryclub.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by UR SUCH A TEASE (talkcontribs) 20:12, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

I don't think I have edited the University of Dayton article at all. Миша13 10:50, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

User talk:Porcupine

Your BotIII seems to have stopped editing my [main account's] user talk page. Is there any reason for this?--Porcupine (see my userpage for details) 12:55, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Update: it's moved three threads, leaving another 6+ that are now over a week old - the period is set to 5 days.--Porcupine (see my userpage for details) 13:36, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

It's still not working; what could be the cause of this?--Porcupine (see my userpage for details) 08:04, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

That's because you have only 5 threads on your talk page. See minthreadsleft and minthreadstoarchive in User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo#Parameters explained. Миша13 10:46, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Great - thanks very much.--Porcupine (see my userpage for details) 13:11, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

That's because (for some reason) the case is not categorized (in Category:Wikipedia Medcab open cases for example). Миша13 10:48, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Your bot and Peer review

Hello Misza. At the Wikipedia:Content review/workshop people have been discussing for nearly a month ways to increase reviewer participation at Wikipedia:Peer review. One thought was to introduce categories on PR to make it more browsable but it was then pointed out that this greatly increases archiving work, which is done manually. And then I noticed your bot came along and archived threads older than 10 days on the workshop talk page. That seemed to be serendipity! Could the bot archive PR? In this case it would be reviews older than 30 days or those that have received no comments in 14. A thread where you might comment is here. Cheers, Marskell 09:31, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Ah, I just saw your archive how-to. Not sure about PR because it's not threads but separate pages that transclude to the main PR. Marskell 09:33, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, the bot examines the page in "edit mode", so there are no timestamps to be found. Scanning through the transcluded page would be tricky and probably requires a specifically-tailored bot. Миша13 23:05, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Misza :)

So, how are you? Yes, I know, Ariel is here, she must want something. You're right, lol. But I hope it is not such a very big thing! Due to changes in the old topaz status changer I was using for so very long, (and how dang complicated it was! I didn't initially install it, so I had no clue how to fix the spam on every page I'd get after it broke) I switched to yours 100% a couple of weeks ago (and yours rocks, by the way, :o) ). Now, I'm sure it is possible, and as you can see I tried to get the switcher to put in a custom edit summary, but it didn't really work out the way I wanted, lol. I managed to get it to change from "busy" to "Ariel is busy for a bit", but it didn't seem to like the spaces... History of my monobook, but basically I just tried to replace the existing "out" with Sleeping, etc., without success (I did at one point, manage to change the links at the top of my page that I use to set the status, that was interesting, hee hee). Anyway, if you happen to have a little time in the coming week, and could help me figure out what I'm doing wrong (you know I'm clueless with the coding stuff, lol), I'd like to have the edit summaries say "Ariel is online now" (in), "Ariel is busy for a bit" (busy), and "Ariel is off to sleep, Good night!" (out). And if it isn't possible, then that's okay too, I just figured that your "leet" coding skills could figure a way to fix it. (And if you just don't want to, that's okay as well, feel free to say no, lol) ArielGold 19:05, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Easier than I thought. Or so I hope, as I just scratched that piece of code without any testing (hoping I'm sane enough to write such a simple gizmo) - lemme know, and if it works, I'll somehow make it configurable (so that people can use it via importScript and still have custom edit summaries). Миша13 23:18, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Wooo! It definitely does work! [1] Wow, so quick you came up with that, I guess I was sort of on the wrong track, hee hee. Good thing I asked, I would never have been able to come up with that fix, lol. Thank you so much! ~*Ariel runs off doing the Happy Happy Joy Joy Dance*~ ArielGold 07:34, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

It missed archiving the one labled "Re: (User talk:ais523) User:Ais523/catwatch.js".--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 19:50, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Sorry - it really tries to be smart, but when people go "creative" and use veeery non-standard timestamps in their signatures (linking to year, month and UTS), it is helpless. Миша13 20:02, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
So what do you think I should do? Try to archive it myself? Just wait and hope it will eventually archive it?--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 20:46, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
No, it won't archive it. Sorry, but you'll have to move it manually. Миша13 20:49, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Okay thanks, I was just wondering.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 20:52, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Miszabot user talk page archiving

Hi. I've noticed that your bot seems to have stopped archiving my talk page about a month ago. I have checked all the settings and they seem to be correct. And so I would be very grateful if you could take a look at User talk:Tbo 157. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) 23:03, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

I beleive it's because you didn't specifiy the minthreadsleft parameter so it defaulted to leave 5 threads left. See here.--Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 23:09, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Hehe, correct. :) At the point where you archived there were 6 threads on the page, and the bot is set to leave at least 5 (minthreadsleft - I should really lower that to 3), so it would have to archive only one, which is prevented from by the minthreadstoarchive parameter. Миша13 23:12, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Oh ok. Thanks. I was just a bit confused since it always archived previous months. Thanks very much. Tbo 157(talk) 23:20, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Template:Pwcotw notice

Misza, this week's notice is ready to be delivered. I know you are busy, so thank you so much for doing this for us! Just as an FYI, we are about to replace this tempalte for a new weekly project-wide newsletter that includes our COTW. When it is time for the change, we will definitely let you know. If you are at all interested, the new tempalte is currently being worked on here before we move it into the project's mainspace. Take care and thanks again. --Naha|(talk) 04:35, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

It's being delivered right now. On weekends it's actually more probable that the newsletter will be sent right away. :-) I look forward to the new template - just signal me as usual and I'll work out the technical details (such as making sure the collab. title gets subst'd). Indexing talk pages: is it possible?

Hi from the Opera Project! SatyrTN suggeted that I might ask your advice. At the moment I'm trying to make our 43 archives more accessible. I've been wondering if there is a way of indexing them based on the TOCs. Is this possible? Best regards. -- Kleinzach 11:28, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Quick question

Hey Misza13! I was wondering if you could help me a bit :) I know that you are a good programmer, and figured you'd be the person to ask my question to. I'm creating a bot that archives threads on ANI that are marked with the {{resolved}} template. I have the source code below, written in Python with the Pywikipedia framework, and any tips or fixes would be appreciated. Thanks! ( arky ) 02:39, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

That looks like some pieces of my code but is pretty chaotic and seems to be missing many parts (the one that parses the page, for example). I'm planning to add that feature to the bot on my own anyway - it will simply require me to restructure the code a bit. Миша13 17:36, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Ha, ok; that's about what I figured :) Thanks anyway, and happy editing, ( arky ) 23:21, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Come on! I need that Colbert image for a user box I made. I got it from the Colbert fansite. Can you help me out? Wikilost 03:08, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

What image, exactly? Миша13 17:16, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
I think it was Image:W eagle.jpg Wikilost 01:28, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
First of all, the image was deleted because it lacked any licensing information whatsoever and therefore qualified under deletion criterion WP:CSD#I4 - relevant information has been placed on your talk page under the header "Image source problem with Image:W eagle.jpg". Second, I doubt that the fansite in question distributes its content under a free license compatible with Wikipedia - and non-free content can only be used under fair use guidelines in articles (not user pages) - see the thread "Orphaned non-free media (Image:W eagle.jpg)", also on your talk page. Миша13 18:02, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I don't know squat about this. I don't think we'll get sued for Stephen Colbert's likeness. I could use some help with this, I'm just trying to make a userbox. Wikilost 01:25, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
To give you a general clue, take a look at the top of any wikipage: "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The concept of free content is not a very easy one, but such freedom basically boils down to allowing others to reuse free works and re-release them under similar conditions. Any copyrighted material is possibly a slippery ground - hence all the hassle with rationales which allow us to use it (and defend in court), and only in articles (userspace is out of the question, as it serves no educational purpose). Now on the issue of userboxes, my personal view is that letters work as well as images. If you really, really need an image, you could try to make one with GIMP/Paint/Inkscape/whatever and upload it under a free license - don't spend too much time on it, however - we're here to build an encyclopedia, remember? Hi. I noticed you deleted this image due to it not being in-use on October 31. I would like to request that you undelete it, if possible. On October 24th, an anonymous vandal removed it for no apparent reason. I was the current uploader of that image, IIRC, and I was not notified that it was being deleted. -- RattleMan 08:13, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Lil Armstrong photo deletion

Some time ago, I uploaded a photo of Lil Armstrong, but did not know how to actually post it. Now I think I have the procedure down, but--in the meantime--you have deleted my upload. I gather that you are worried about copyright, so let me explain that this is an old publicity photo that Lil paid for herself. In 1961, when I produced an album of her band and we started working on her biography, she gave me the print in question. There is no copyright, nobody knows who the photographer was, and I don't see that there is anything to worry about. I notice that publicity photos are often used with Wikipedia listings--Bessie Smith, for example (and I have clearer prints of that). Please tell me what I can do to get Lil's picture in there. I have some that I myself took of her, but they do not do her justice.

I should add that I have often used photos in my books where the photographer/studio was unknown or out of business and untraceable. There has never been a problem with such pictures. Christiern Albertson 21:13, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

The images were deleted under criterion WP:CSD#I4 - no source and copyright tag provided. I encourage you to read the message titled "License tagging for Image:Lil Armstrong portrait (cropped).jpg" on your talk page and make yourself familiar with the policies mentioned, specifically Wikipedia:Image use policy. While I'm not an expert on copyright law, 1960s doesn't seem old enough to qualify as public domain by age yet. However, you might ask for detailed advice (specifically, how to mention attribution and permission correctly) on the policy's talk page. Миша13 19:22, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I'm Ral315, editor of the Wikipedia Signpost. We're interviewing all ArbCom candidates for an article next week, and your response is requested.

  1. What positions do you hold (adminship, arbitration, mediation, etc.)?
  2. Why are you running for the Arbitration Committee?
  3. Have you been involved in any arbitration cases? In what capacity?
  4. In the past year, are there any cases that you think the Arbitration Committee handled exceptionally well? Any you think they handled poorly?
  5. Why do you think users should vote for you?

Please respond on my talk page. We'll probably go to press late Monday or early Tuesday (UTC), but late responses will be added as they're submitted. Thanks, Ral315 » 04:47, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Template:Vandalism information

Hi, can you make sure WdefconBot doesn't overwrite the recent changes to Template:Vandalism information? Thanks – Gurch 20:42, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

I mean it – Gurch 02:04, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
Imagine I got your message the first time through. Also imagine that some people aren't awake 24/7 like yourself. Finally, please explain how the elimination of every occurrence of the word "Wdefcon" from Wikipedia is critical to its continuous operation. Anyway, should be fixed now - I hope it's easy to imagine that the bot simply replaces the content of the template with new text - now that bad idea since people can break it more seriously than bots. ArbCom table with portfolio links

Hello! As we did for last year's election, we are again compiling a Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2007/Summary table. This table contains a column "Portfolio" for links that display candidates' pertinent skills. I will be going through each candidate's statements and gradually populate the column, but this may take some time. Please feel free to add some links in the form [link|c] if you feel it shows conflict resolution skills, or [link|o] otherwise. It would also be helpful if you can check if the information about you is correct.

My motivation is that as a voter, I don't want to just rely on a candidate's words, but also see their actions. Moreover, I believe a portfolio of "model cases" to remember in difficult situations can be useful for each candidate, as well. I believe that conflict resolution skills are most pertinent to the position, but if you want to highlight other skills, please feel free to use a new letter and add it to Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2007/Summary table#Columns of this table. — Sebastian 05:35, 28 November 2007 (UTC)    (I stopped watching this page as of 02:25, 30 November 2007 (UTC). Archiving

I'm wanting to archive what's on my user talk page, but leave the NOTICE TO CANDIDATES alone. And want to use the automatic Archiving which archives comments, after certain days. Is there a chance if i could use your automatic archiving, i've tried to on my own but it doesn't seem to work, and i don't know what to do. SKYNET X1000 (talk) 14:42, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Never mind, I've changed my mind. SKYNET X1000 (talk) 14:48, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Trouble with Archiving?

Misza13, although previously i asked if it was possible for you to archive my talk page, i'm having difficulty in archiving my own talk page and wouldn't mind using the bot to automatically archive the talks on my user talk page. Is that permitted...... SKYNET X1000 (talk) 20:27, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Have a look at User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo to get the general idea. Have a look at the examples provided and choose one. Then add whatever code is required somewhere near the top of your talk page. The bot runs once each day and archives only when there's a certain minimum of threads, so it may take a while before it does anything with your talk (it needs to fill with some content). Regarding leaving the first section alone, it will be left as long as it doesn't contain any timestamps. Миша13 20:38, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

I've placed example two onto the user talk page, what will happen to my archive box which i placed on it will it get updated SKYNET X1000 (talk) 20:44, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Three things:
  1. You forgot to change "User talk:Example" to the name of your page. (Not that I'm surprised - maaaaaaaany people do that.)
  2. Why did you set the counter to 3? Do you have 2 previous archives already? With that setting, the bot would start archiving to "/Archive 3" - is that what you want?
  3. If you change the archive box to use auto=yes, it should automatically update itself when new subpages are created.
Миша13 21:02, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Misza, I've followed your instructions and changed the counter to 1 since there hasn't been any archived previously and changed the User talk:Example to User talk:SKYNET X1000, and I've changed the archive box to the one which has auto=yes. Have i done it correctly. SKYNET X1000 (talk) 08:14, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Seems fine to me now - once your talk fills with some threads, it should pick it up. Миша13 21:07, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

That's good to hear it would safe me some time from trying to archiving my user talk page manually which on the preview page I've been mucking it up, but now i can ignore it and thanks for letting me use the automatic archive bot. SKYNET X1000 21:13, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Incomplete archiving

Hello, MiszaBot II incompletely archived threads from Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard: after this edit, it archived two threads to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive112 ([2]), but forgot to create Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive113, and to archive the last three threads (I archived them manually: [3]). Regards, Korg (talk) 23:09, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for catching that - it sometimes happens as there is virtually no mechanism of assuring atomicity of two (much less three) separate edits - it may succeed on some but fail on others. Миша13 14:39, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Archive to /dev/null

Hi. MiszaBot III has just archived some of my talk page to "/dev/null", despite my configuration saying I want it to archive them to my archive page. Can you shed any light on this please? ~~ [Jam][talk] 13:20, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Exactly that - the bot doesn't understand the template when it's compacted into one line - it's simply not a usual template. Миша13 14:37, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Ah, OK. I did wonder if that was the case. I've expanded it out now :). Thanks. ~~ [Jam][talk] 14:40, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

A little help

I put your bot template on Talk:Aang to start archiving pages. It seems not to be doing anything. Is there something wrong with the parameters I put in? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Parent5446 (talkcontribs) 00:33, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
