[edit] I also feel this is a racist event, and should have a topic about this listed

Obviously white and hispanic women would be banned from entering this event, clearly discrimination, should require a contraversy section.

[edit] Isn't it Racist ?

If there where a Miss Caucasian, or Miss Aryan, wouldn't it be 'Racist'? Why isn't Miss Black, then?

Racism is discrimination based on race with the belief that one's race is superior. I don't believe Miss Black America is a pageant about black superiority. There are also Miss Latina USA pageant and Miss Chinatown USA pageant among other ethnic pageants. sforest11

I THINK THAT IT IS RACIST THAT I COULD FIND NO INFO ON THE WEB CONCERNING THE 1978 MISS BLACK AMERICA PAGEANT OR THE WINNER, A MISS LYDIA JACKSON. I ATTENDED JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL WITH LYDIA JACKSON. MY NAME IS MAURICE GRIMES, MY E-MAIL ADDRESS IS RUNAWAYMG@MSN.COM

I don't know if it is racist that a specific winner is not listed. I would request that someone update the list. I could not find a list of winners anywhere on the web. sforest11

Mssage from Hornetman16
  • Miss White America = a slap on the wrist by handcuffs

while,

  • Miss Black America = a trophy

No tell me that's not racist!-- Hornetman16 19:05, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Seriously, it isn't racist. The Miss Black America was formed in 1968 when the Miss America pageant specifically excluded all women who were not of the White Race as rule number 7 of the Miss America Pageant rules and regulations prescribed, so in essence, the Miss America Pageant was the Miss White America. This pageant wanted to provide a forum for Black women to compete as well and be valued for their beauty on African American Beauty standards. Since they obviously couldn't call their pageant the Miss America pageant as well, they gave it is next obvious title choice. Furthermore there is Aryan pageant hosted by the KKK every year. This pageant took place on the same day as the Miss America pageant in direct protest…the same day as the infamous feminist protest on the pageant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.131.42.84 (talk) 02:18, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Actually, a bit of research found that at least as recently as 2006, being Black is not a requirement to compete, surprisingly enough. Being 17-29, unmarried, female, and having no children are the only requirements. And apparently, THOSE rules aren't even set in stone. It's possible to petition in an application that you are NOT one of those things but that it wouldn't affect your ability to reign as Miss Black America and they will consider waiving the rules and letting you compete.

-A thought-

As I read more on the topic of racial double standards exisiting in America, there seems to be a growing concensus among youth regarding the entitlement of minorities to the same traditional enjoyments that racial majorities have become accustomed to. Whites shouldn't feel threatened by this and minority members shouldn't place blame on generations who have long left behind the old kill or be killed mentality regarding racial coexistence.

    • Bottom line seems to be that race is a VERY relative term and to call an event which clearly has no malicious intent or philosophy racisit is unfair, illogical and is immature given the state of the world these days. - (Hew) concerned and annoyed.

[edit] The Green Duck

I saw her play "The Green Duck" in NYC and it was absolutely horrible. That isn't helpful, but I thought I'd mention it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.145.154.52 (talk) 21:37, 5 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Fixing?

There are some inconsistencies on this page that needed to be fixed up. First in the trivia part it stated that Gloria O. Smith from NY won in 1969, but yet on the "winners" box area above it says unknown. Also, back on that trivia part a Joyce Warner won in 1972, but again up above it says she won in the year 1971. I also notice a few more that needs to be corrected; I'm surprised no ones noticed before? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 208.31.45.49 (talk) 21:35, 9 March 2007 (UTC).

Miss Black America 1969 was Charlene Dash. This is documented on miniMadMOD60's which shows a picture of her wearing the crown and sash, taken from the article in Life magazine "Black Models Take Center Stage. http://groups.msn.com/MiniMadMod60s/modmembers.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=12366
