Miss World 1996

In its 46th year, the Miss World pageant took place on the 22nd of November, 1996 in city of Bangalore, India amidst protests from various people and parties from the political and social spectrum of India. 88 contestants took part in the prestigious pageant. By the end of the night, Irene Skliva of Greece took home the title.

  • Bonaire, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Macedonia competed in Miss World for the first time.
  • Grenada last competed in 1970.
  • Yugoslavia last competed in 1991 after a 5-year civil war in which its nation was divided among independent states.
  • Uganda, and Uruguay last competed in 1993.
  • Kenya last competed in 1994.

  • Preliminaries in Miss World 1996 were shot in India and in Seychelles because of the feminine protests that occur in India against the Miss World beauty pageant.
  • Bosnia & Herzegovina and Macedonia competed in Miss World for the first time.
  • Yugoslavia returned to Miss World after a 5-year civil war.
  • Macau was the last of her four siblings in the Pedruco family who competed in Miss World.
  • Dominican Republic made into the semi-finals after Mariasela Alvarez had won the Miss World title in 1982.
  • Three contestants competed in Miss Universe 1996: Hungary, Taiwan R.O.C., and Turkey.
  • Five contestants competed in Miss Universe 1997: Belgium, Bonaire, Czech Republic, Poland, and Switzerland.
  • Ukraine (Nataliya Shvachko) competed in Miss Universe 2000, while Canada (Michelle Weswaldi) competed in Miss Earth 2001.
  • Belgium, who placed as semi-finalist in Miss World, failed to put herself through the semi-finals of Miss Universe 1997 in Miami.
  • Nigeria (Emma Komlousy) is the daughter of a former beauty queen, and the first mixed-raced contestant (half-Bulgarian) in her country. Thailand (Sirinya Winsiri) is half-American with the name Cindy Burbridge.
