Miss World 1991

The 41st Miss World Pageant was held on December 28, 1991 in Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The winner was Ninibeth Beatriz Leal Rodrgiuez (Queen of Americas) from the Venezuela. Runner up was Leanne Buckle (Queen of Asia & Oceania) representing Australia and third was Diana Tilden-Davis (Queen of Africa) from South Africa.

  • Greenland competed in Miss World for the first time.
  • South Africa last competed in 1977 after the MWO decided to lift a 14-year apartheid rule, allowing its contestants to compete.
  • Antigua last competed in 1986.
  • Lebanon, and Swaziland last competed in 1988.
  • Republic of China, Ecuador, and Malaysia last competed in 1989.

  • Canada, Tara Paat withdrew from Miss World 1991 14 days before the pageant due to her illness.
  • Cook Islands, Luxembourg, and Papua New Guinea were no longer to send their respective delegates in Miss World.
  • Peru did not compete in Miss World because of problems with franchise-holding and lack of sponsorship. Hong Kong, on the other hand, renewed its franchise with the Miss Hong Kong Organization; however it was happened nearly three months after Miss World.
  • Sri Lanka did not compete in Miss World because of scheduling conflict.
  • U.S.S.R. did not compete in Miss World when the nation was already divided into 15 states known as the Commonwealth of the Independent States.

  • Miss World 1991 was scheduled to be held in the Dominican Republic. Due to scheduling difficulties, Miss World was first moved to Puerto Rico, then to Atlanta, USA.
  • Twelve out of 78 contestants competed in Miss Universe.
    • Belize, France, and Paraguay competed in Miss Universe 1991 which was held in Las Vegas. Paraguay failed to make into the Top 10 in Miss World, but she did make the semifinals in Miss Universe 1991. France, on the other hand, made into semi-finals in both Miss Universe and Miss World at the same year.
    • Belgium, Cayman Islands, Iceland, Namibia, New Zealand, and Switzerland competed in Miss Universe 1992 which was held in Bangkok. Namibia who placed fifth in Miss World, won Miss Universe 1992, while New Zealand made into the semi-finals in Miss World 1991, as well as Miss Universe 1992. Belgium, who failed to make into the semi-finals, became the finalist in Miss Universe in that year.
    • El Salvador and Jamaica competed in Miss Universe 1989, while Ghana in Miss Universe 1993. Jamaica previously made into the semi-finals in Miss Universe 1989, before she placed fourth in Miss World two years later. Sandra Foster, Miss Jamaica was Miss Intercontinental 1990.
  • Preliminary swimsuits in Miss World 1991 were held in South Africa.
  • South Africa returned to Miss World after a 14-year post-apartheid rule, and was the first time to crown as Queen of Africa. Diana Tilden-Davis was later attacked by a hippopotamus in Botswana in December 2003, and suffered bruises and long-term injuries. She was recovered from injuries three years later in 2006.
  • This was also the first time that no European country made into the finals for crowning.
  • France, Mareva Georges, represented her country in Miss World although she came from the island of Tahiti.
  • Trinidad & Tobago, Sastee Bachan, currently works as a trained make-up artist who lives in Toronto, and as a fashion & pageant consultant for Miss World Canada.
  • Singapore, Jasheen Jayakody, currently lives in San Francisco, California with her American husband and one child.
  • Australia, Leanne Buckle (now Mrs. Frew), currently works as a photographer and a model, and lives with her husband and three children.
  • Malaysia, Samantha Schubert was born in England, and raise in Malaysia since childhood. She is currently an actrss and a model, after she studied at the Lee Strasburg School of Film & Theatre Los Angeles, The Beverly Hills Playhouse Los Angeles and Drama Studio London.
  • Germany, Susanne Petry would go on and win Miss Intercontinental 1992.
  • USA, Charlotte Ray was also Miss New Jersey USA 1991 and competed at Miss USA 1991. She finished 1st runner up in the pageant and was also named Miss Congeniality.
