Miss World 1990

The 40th Miss World Pageant was held on November 8, 1990 in the London Palladium, London, UK. The winner was Gina Marie Tolleson (Queen of Americas) from the United States. Runner up was Siobhan McClafferty (Queen of Europe) representing Ireland and third was Sharon Raquel Luengo Gonzalez from Venezuela.

  • Romania competed in Miss World for the first time.
  • Madagascar last competed in 1974.
  • Brazil last competed in 1987.
  • Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Bulgaria, Cook Islands, Egypt, India, and Uruguay last competed in 1988.

  • Republic of China, and Swaziland failed to send delegates in Miss World 1990.
  • Ecuador and Malaysia were failed to send their delegates because of the lack of sponsorship.
  • Lebanon did not compete in Miss World due to a civil war.

  • 16 out of 81 contestants competed in Miss Universe 1989-1992.
    • Aruba, Belize, Egypt, France, Germany, Nigeria, and Turkey competed in Miss Universe 1990 which was held in Los Angeles. Aruba surprisingly made it into the Top 10 in Miss World. Turkey, on the other hand, made into semi-finals in both Miss Universe and Miss World at the same year.
    • Belgium, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Ghana, Ireland, Namibia, and United Kingdom competed in Miss Universe 1991 which was held in Las Vegas. Curaçao surprinsingly made into the Top 10 semi-finals in Miss Universe the following year.
    • Trinidad & Tobago competed in Miss Universe 1989, while Kenya in Miss Universe 1992.
  • Preliminary swimsuits in Miss World 1990 were held in Norway.
  • United States (Miss World 1990) married celebrity star, Alan Thicke, but later divorced. She was also the 1st runner-up in the Miss USA pageant as Miss South Carolina USA. She also hosted with Peter Marshall in Miss World 1991.
  • Dominican Republic (Brenda Marte Lajara) came from the Dominican community in Queens, New York, USA.
  • Ireland won Miss Photogenic in Miss Universe 1991.
  • Gibraltar (Sarah Yeats) and Switzerland (Priscilla Leimgruber) did not compete in Miss Universe 1991. Gibraltar lost its franchise with the Miss Universe organization, while Miss Switzerland fell ill, and then she withdrew at the last minute.
  • Germany (Christiane Stocker) also won the Miss Amity award in Miss Universe 1990.
  • Australia (Karina Brown) is currently a hostess in various local television programs.
  • Yugoslavia (Ivona Brnelic) has currently lived and worked in London because of her duty to work with some prominent celebrities like Tina Turner and Cher.
  • Brazil returned to Miss World after a 2-year absence.
  • Miss Universe Organization did not allow Venezuela, Sharon Luengo to participate in in Miss Universe 1991
