Miss Universe 2008, the 57th Miss Universe beauty pageant, will be held at the Crown Convention Center (Diamond Bay Resort) in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14, 2008[1] where outgoing titleholder Riyo Mori will crown her successor. More than 80 contestants are expected to compete in the event[2] which will be broadcast via NBC and Telemundo to TV outlets in more than 180 countries. The final presentation show is on July 8, the dress rehearsal on July 13 and the live telecast on July 14. Most activities are being held successively in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Nha Trang.

Returning countries and territories

Nations not competing in 2008

  • Flag of Bulgaria Bulgaria - The Miss Bulgaria Organization announced that its 2008 pageant would take place in the form of a reality show, and it has been scheduled for production in July. The winner will compete in Miss World 2008 and the 1st runner-up in Miss Universe 2009.[83]
  • Flag of Chile Chile - A new organization uniting the franchise holders of the major pageants (Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth) will be in charge of organizing the new Miss Chile contest. They will send representatives to Miss World 2008, Miss Earth 2008, Miss International 2008, and Miss Universe 2009.[84]
  • Flag of Lebanon Lebanon - Miss Lebanon will not be competing in Miss Universe this year due to the latest political conflict.
  • Flag of Namibia Namibia - When Marichen Jolandi Luiperth competed in Miss World 2007, Miss Namibia Organization announced the no Miss Namibia will represent Namibia in Miss Universe 2008. Marichen Luiperth complete her reign of Miss Namibia. The new winner of Miss Namibia 2008 will have preparation to compete in Miss World 2008 which will take place in Ukraine. There is a doubt if Namibia will compete in Miss Universe next year due to a scheduling conflict; however, Namibia will have a chance to compete next year by granting a new franchise for Miss Universe.
  • Flag of the Northern Mariana Islands Northern Mariana Islands - Stellar Marianas president Laila Y. Boyer announced their contest would be rescheduled to select a delegate for Miss Universe 2009.[85]
  • Flag of Sweden Sweden - Froken Sverige Lina Hahne stated in her blog that she had hoped she could travel to Vietnam and compete in Miss Universe, but the organizer decided not to send her.[86]

Replacement delegates

  • Flag of France France - Miss Pays de Loire, Laura Tanguy, will represent France. She was second runner up in the Miss France competition, but the winner, Valérie Bègue, was banned after suggestive photos of her appeared in the media shortly after she was crowned.[87] The first runner-up, Miss New Caledonia Vahinerii Requillart, decided to not compete in Miss Universe because she wants to continue studying.[88][89]

  • Flag of Russia Russia - The winner of Miss Russia 2007 Ksenia Sukhinova was supposed to represent Russia, but due to her studies was replaced by her 2nd runner-up Vera Krasova.

Contestant Notes

  • Daša Živković (Montenegro) placed 3rd Runner-up at the Miss Tourism Queen International 2008 pageant.[90]
  • In February 2008, Miss Universe organization president Paula Shugart announced that a Miss Kosovo would compete in Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam.[91] Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia had already announced that they would boycott the pageant if Kosovo participates. As Vietnam and Kosovo do not have diplomatic relations, the Vietnam government probably would not allow such participation since it opposes Kosovo's independence.[92].
  • Ingrid Marie Rivera, Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2008 was 2nd Runner-up at Miss World 2005. She was previously Miss Global Queen 2003.[93]
  • Shenise Wong, Miss Singapore Universe 2008, was previously competed in Miss Asia-Pacific 1999, Miss International 2002, and Miss World 2005.[55]
  • Marianne Cruz, Miss Dominican Republic 2008 is the reigning Miss Continente Americano 2007.[94]
  • Sacha Scott (Bahamas) is the daughter of Miss Bahamas 1982, Christina Thompson-Scott, who competed in Miss Universe 1983
  • Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela 2007 was a finalist at the Elite Model Look International 2001, in Nice, France.[95]
  • Samantha Tajik, Miss Universe Canada 2008 currently holds the International Model Of The Year 2007 title and was 2nd runner-up in Miss Global Beauty Queen 2007.
