The Miss Universe 1997 pageant was held in Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida, United States, culminating in the final competition on May 16, 1997. This was the second consecutive year that the pageant had been held in the United States. Miss USA, Brook Lee of Hawaii was crowned Miss Universe 1997 by previous titleholder, Alicia Machado of Venezuela. The leader at that stage was Denny Mendez of Italy, who placed second in interview, swimsuit and evening gown. Eventual winner Brooke Lee of the USA won the interview competition and placed third in swimsuit and fourth in evening gown.
