The Miss USA 2000 pageant was held in Branson, Missouri at The Grand Palace on February 4, 2000. The event was won by Lynnette Cole of Tennessee, who was crowned by outgoing queen Kimberly Pressler of New York.
Cole was the first Tennessean to win the Miss USA title, and became the third former Miss Teen USA delegate to win the crown. Cole's placement came after Morgan Tandy High of Tennessee placed first runner-up in the previous year's competition.
The pageant was held in Branson for the second and final time, at the 4,000 seat Grand Palace Theatre, and was the last pageant held in February. Carson Daly hosted the event for the first and only time, and color commentary was added by Ali Landry, Miss USA 1996 and Julie Moran. Entertainment was provided by Christina Aguilera, Lou Bega Brian McKnight and Mark Wills.

Jina Mitchell's (Alabama) evening gown score (9.93) was the highest ever recorded in either the Miss USA, Miss Teen USA or Miss Universe pageants in the years that the scores were shown (1979-2002). The previous highest score was 9.870, achieved by Lu Parker of South Carolina in 1994, and the second highest (9.86) by Shanna Moakler of New York in 1995. Parker went on to win the Miss USA title, Moakler placed first runner-up in her competition. Mitchell wore a simple black evening gown designed by Pamela Dennis for her presentation.
By placing in this pageant, a number of delegates made records in the history of their state pageants. Jensie Grigsby of Iowa was the first Iowan to make the semi-finals since 1993 (and only the second since 1960) and Tiani Jones was the first semi-finalist from Colorado since 1989. Bridget Vezina recorded her state's highest placement in the history of the competition, was the first from New Hampshire to place since 1980, and was at the time one of only three New Hampshire delegates to place at Miss USA.

Fourteen delegates had previously competed in either the Miss Teen USA or Miss America pageants and two delegates would later win a Miss America state title. One of those, Jennifer Dupont, the youngest in the competition, later became a Triple Crown winner, for holding state titles for Miss Teen USA, Miss USA and Miss America. Dupont competed in the Miss USA pageant less than two years after competed at Miss Teen USA.
