[edit] Historical significance

  • New York placed for the first time since Shanna Moakler placed first runner-up in 1995 and then assumed the Miss USA title. This was third time that the state won the Miss USA pageant, and the fourth year they held the title.
  • Tennessee made the top three for the third time in four years, and California made the top three for the second consecutive year.
  • South Carolina placed for the first time since Lu Parker won in 1994. Lauren Poppell become one of only a few women to place at both Miss USA and Miss Teen USA.
  • New Mexico placed for the first time since 1987, and Ohio for the first time since 1990, ending these states' longest period without placement. Ohio would not make the semi-finals again until Miss USA 2006, when Stacy Offenberger placed third runner-up.
  • Virginia placed for the second consecutive year for the first time since 1981-1982.
