Miss Tibbs & Miss Gatsby

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miss Gatsby and Miss Tibbs were fictional characters (played by Gilly Flower and Renee Roberts respectively) in the BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers.

Miss Ursula Gatsby (Roberts) and Miss Abitha Tibbs (Flower) are two mostly inseparable and slightly scatty elderly spinsters who are permanent residents of Fawlty Towers. (The only other long-term guest is Major Gowen.) They seem to take a fancy to Basil, though he switches from being overly kind to being utterly rude during his various conversations with them, and they rarely understand his sarcasm.

The two ladies seldom have main roles in the plot, and are usually only background characters to add to the atmosphere. They appear in every single episode of the series, however they were uncredited in A Touch of Class (the pilot). Miss Tibbs played a large role in the episode The Kipper and the Corpse, where she was startled by the corpse of Mr. Leeman, whom Basil, Manuel and Polly were desperately trying to get rid of. In that episode it was revealed that Tibbs was 79, which accounts nicely for her and Miss Gatsby's fondness for dressing in the 1920s flapper style of clothing - obviously of their heyday. It may also account for the choice of the character name "Gatsby".

The characters also appeared in a 1983 episode of Only Fools and Horses 'Homesick' in character as Miss Gatsby and Miss Tibbs.
