Miss Teen USA 1989, the seventh Miss Teen USA pageant, was televised live from San Bernardino, California on July 25, 1989. At the conclusion of the final competition, Brandi Sherwood of Idaho was crowned by outgoing queen Mindy Duncan of Oregon.[1]

This was the second and final year the pageant was held in San Bernadino. It was hosted by Wil Shriner, with colour commentary from Marcia Strassman and Angela Visser, Miss Universe 1989.[2] Entertinament was provided by Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

[edit] Historical significance

  • This was Idaho's first and so far only placement at Miss Teen USA.
  • Vermont also placed for the first time, and has only placed once since when Charlotte Lopez won Miss Teen USA 1993.
  • South Dakota placed for the second time, and has not placed since.
  • Kentucky recorded their highest placement in the pageant's history; this has yet to be equalled or surpassed.
  • This equalled North Dakota's highest previous placement in the pageant, a record surpassed when Katie Cooper placed second runner-up at Miss Teen USA 2006.
  • Washington placed for the first time since 1985.
  • New York placed for the fourth consecutive year, a streak only matched by Texas in the early years of the pageant.

  • Brandi Sherwood later won the Miss Idaho USA 1997 title and competed in the Miss USA 1997 pageant, where she placed first runner-up to Brook Lee. Lee later won the Miss Universe 1997 pageant, and Sherwood assumed the Miss USA 1997 title. She was the first and so far the only Miss Teen USA winner to hold the Miss USA title.
  • Other contestants who later competed at Miss USA were:
  • First runner-up Kristie Dawn Hicks later won the Miss Kentucky 1995 title and competed at Miss America 1996.
  • The Miss Nevada Teen USA title was initially held by Heather McLeod, who was disqualified because she had competed at Miss California Teen USA the same year. McLeod was replaced by Stacey Bentley only days before the national pageant was held.[4]
