[edit] Non-canon appearances

  • In the first book of the Star Trek: Vanguard series (Harbinger), a Miranda-class USS Bombay makes an appearance in 2265 and is described as having warp nacelles with "glowing domes", similar in description to a pre-refit Starship Enterprise. Cbing01 05:56, 19 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Naming systems

Evidently "ST" writers have never heard of them. Navies always name ship classes similarly for ease of identification. Miranda-class ships should obviously have all been named for literary characters (such as Rhysling, Perry Rhodan, or Daneel Olivaw...). Alternatively, given three major variants, three distinct name systems should have been used: Miranda, Reliant, and Lantree groups. --trekphiler, 16/11/05

Actually, the name 'Reliant' predates Miranda. but hey. Morwen - Talk 11:04, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Nebula

Could this ship be considered the predecessor to the Nebula-class starship?

Perhaps, but because of the speculatory nature of such a claim, it has no place in the article. - Hayter 11:40, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] NCC number error

I noticed that two Saratogas existed with different NCC numbers. This is inconsistant with Starfleet convention. Based on the Enterprise, which included NCC-1701A, NCC-1701B, NCC-1701C, NCC-1701D, and NCC-1701E (plus, according to Daniels of the 31st century in the ENT timeline, NCC-1701J), you would expect the second Saratoga to be NCC-1867A. However, according to the article, it's NCC-31911. These do appear to be the offical numbers used by the producers, but there is a lot of inconsistancies with those numbers.--Will 03:46, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

The story behind the NCC-1701A, NCC-1701B, etc, is that it honors Kirk's ship. The Saratoga did not seem to have been famous and therefore the second Saratoga was given its own registry number. Other names have been used on ships with different registries, USS Bellerophon, USS Defiant, USS Exeter, USS Hood, USS Intrepid, and, USS Lexington. There are propably others. I find it very odd that only one ship was accorded such an honor. Surely there were others.--Will 13:49, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Lets not lose sight that when the Next Generation came out there were trying to make a link between the new series and the original series. That didn't just include the name but also the registry number, its just with the addition of the D it made it look newer.Jsp3970 01:31, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
I haven't seen the original source, but apparently Gene Roddenberry's novelisation of Star Trek: The Motion Picture explained that the reason the Enterprise was so honoured was because she was the first of the ships sent out on "five year missions" to return "mostly intact". The only other ship in Trek ever to use a letter was the USS Yamato, which was a script error. It honours the Enterprise - all other ships have a new number with a recycled name. Struckthrough because there's so much about that statement I need to wake up about. Sorry :) It couldn't have been a novelisation of TMP, because at that point there were no registry letters (1701-A first appearing in TVH). Google searching for that memory doesn't provide much to back it up. All in all, not a worthy debate contribution, although I do maintain that the lettered distinction applies only to Enterprise, as she is the only ship we've seen honoured in that way. [edit] Avenger or Miranda Class

Shouldn't we be mentioning the early "Avenger class" name for this ship? Has Miranda actually been established on screen yet? Morwen - Talk 11:04, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Apparently, Miranda was mentioned in dialog in DS9, finally. Need to track that down. Morwen - Talk 10:49, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
The "Avenger" class reference is non-canon and created in fandom based on Kahn's last statement of "I will avenge you" when his first mate is killed during the battle in the Mutara Nebula. This has been perpetuated further by fan made blueprints (created by Michael Ruppert, Federation Frontiers [1]) that also refer to this ship as the USS Avenger, and indicates this as the "Avenger" class heavy frigate.
