Miraz is a fictional character from C. S. Lewis's fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia. He is a prominent character in the second book Prince Caspian, and is the uncle of the book's protagonist.

Miraz is the false king of Narnia, having killed his own brother, Caspian IX, in order to assume the throne. The relationship between Miraz and his brother's son, Prince Caspian, resembles that of Claudius and Hamlet in Shakespeare's play Hamlet.

Miraz is a cruel and unpopular ruler who has banned the teaching of Narnia's pre-Telmarine history. He tolerates Caspian as his heir - officially taking the title of "Lord Protector" for himself - until his wife, Prunaprismia, bears a son. Caspian is then forced to flee. He is injured in a storm and sheltered by a talking badger and two dwarfs. He is then taken to visit other "Old Narnians" who live in hiding, and is accepted by them as their rightful king. Civil war ensues between Miraz and the Telmarines against Caspian and the Old Narnians. Caspian uses Susan's magic horn to call the Pevensies back to Narnia, and Peter duels with King Miraz. But Miraz trips and falls to the ground, and is stabbed to death by his counselor Lord Glozelle in revenge for an earlier insult. Caspian takes his place as king of Narnia, and with the help of Aslan restores the old ways. Aslan offers the Telmarines a chance to live on a secluded island in our world, saying that whoever accepts his proposal will lead a good life, though not in Narnia.

Lewis never states what happens to Caspian's cousin, the son of Miraz and Prunaprismia, who had only recently been born, although in the movie adaption of the book he leaves Narnia with his mother.

[edit] Trivia

  • Miraz's actor for the Disney adaptation, Sergio Castellitto, stated that Miraz will be the first villain role he has portrayed. On the character, he said that it will be "interesting to act out a stereotype."
  • There has been some debate about how Miraz's name should be pronounced. In the 1989 BBC Mini-series, his name was pronounced "Meer-razz". But in the Behind-the-Scenes features on the DVD set of the 2005 film the makers of that film pronounced it "Murr-azz". In the 2008 Narnia movie, the Telmarines and most of the characters pronounce it "Meer-razz," while some other characters pronounce it "Murr-azz."
