Miracle Mart (Canada)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miracle Mart was a discount department stores chain in Ontario and Quebec founded in 1960, that was created and owned by Quebec-based grocery chain Steinberg. These stores operated at mid-level and competed with the likes of Towers/Bonimart, Zellers, Woolco and Kmart. There was also a spinoff grocery chain, Miracle Food Mart, that operated exclusively in Ontario.
The Miracle Mart department stores were renamed M Store around 1986, while the grocery store continued to operate as Miracle Food Mart. In 1990, A&P Canada acquired the Miracle Mart Food Mart chain in a $202.5 million deal from Steinberg. The M stores, still owned by Steinberg, continued to operate in both provinces.
In an attempt to capture the volatile retail sector, M modified its logo in late 1991 from pink to red, and added the word "aubaines" in diagonal and attached letters on the logo. But this wasn't enough. The M stores were liquidated in 1992, virtually the same time parent company Steinberg went bankrupt.
The name lives on in an unrelated North Dakota supermarket chain.
