[edit] Biography

Harry Edison was born in Columbus, Ohio on October 10, 1915 and first learned to play trumpet at age twelve.[1] In Columbus he played with various local bands. In 1933 he joined the Jeter-Pillars Orchestra, an orchestra co-led by two former members of Alphonso Trent's big band—James Jeter and Hayes Pillars.[2] In 1937 he was a member of the Mills Blue Rhythm Band and in 1938 he began playing with Count Basie, staying with Basie until 1950.[1] While with Basie he shared solo time with fellow trumpet player Buck Clayton. In 1944 he appeared in the short film Jammin' the Blues, receiving his nickname "Sweets" from saxophonist Lester Young.[2]
