Yuanwu Keqin (Japanese: Engo Kokugon) (1063—1135) was a Chinese Linji Ch'an master of the Yangqi school, best known for his forewords and commentary on all one-hundred cases in the 1124 (or 1125) edition of the "Blue Cliff Record"—a collection of koans and verses originally compiled by Xuedou Chongxian (Japanese: Setchō Jūshin) in the 11th century. He also compiled commentary on another text of one-hundred verses by Chongxian titled "Niangu."

Yuanwu Keqin was born in Pengzhou, China in 1063 and—like most Chinese youths of his era—he was well read on Confucianism.[1]
