[edit] History
The route was paved as early as 1929.
This route does not currently include any of its original marked extent. The surviving segment of Minnesota Highway 45 (from Scanlon to Carlton) is part of the original U.S. Highway 61.
The route originally designated Minnesota 45 is the extension of this route northwest of I-35 to downtown Cloquet. This segment was turned back to Carlton County / city of Cloquet maintenance around 1995 and is now known as County Highway 45.
