[edit] Termini
The roadway runs from Interstate Highway 35W in Roseville, Minnesota to the Minnesota-Wisconsin border in Stillwater, where it becomes Wisconsin Highway 64 upon crossing the state line.
[edit] Route
State Highway 36 crosses (or at least gets halfway across) the St. Croix River via the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge. The road becomes Wisc. Hwy. 64 in the middle of the bridge. However, planning is taking place to replace the bridge, which reached its practical capacity in 1990. Because the bridge is considered historically significant, this has become a heated issue.[2]
[edit] History
Highway 36 used to be significantly longer, turning southward along I-35W, Washington Avenue, and Cedar Avenue, and connecting to what is now Minnesota State Highway 77 (Cedar Avenue Freeway). The section of old Highway 36 that ran along Washington and Cedar Avenues in Minneapolis was turned back to county maintenance, and is currently a section of Hennepin County Road 152.
The highway didn't originally reach the state border at the St. Croix River. Part of Minnesota State Highway 212 was redesignated as Highway 36. This section still carries the old Highway 212 mile markers.
[edit] Notes
From Roseville eastward to Interstate Highway 35E and about 2 miles beyond, Highway 36 is a limited-access freeway. The freeway ends east of U.S. Highway 61 at English Street, where Highway 36 becomes an at-grade expressway. For about 4-miles (6 km) outside of the I-494/694 loop, the expressway section has a speed limit of 65 miles per hour (105 km/h).
[edit] Construction work on Highway 36
The section of Highway 36 in North St. Paul was closed from mid-April until mid-September of 2007. The highway is being rebuilt to freeway standards between White Bear Avenue in Maplewood and Highway 120 (Century Avenue) in North St. Paul. This rebuilding will include grade-separated intersections, but there will be no interchanges or access within North St. Paul. The full closure allowed the project to be completed faster and at a lower cost, and it also increased safety for construction workers. The Highway 36 reconstruction project will be completed in 2008 and has a budget of $24 million.[3]
