Minnesota State Highway 1 is a highway in northwest and northeast Minnesota. At 346-miles in length, it is the longest state route in Minnesota.

This road still had an unpaved segment in 1996, between U.S. 53 and Minnesota 169. At that point it was swapped with paved St. Louis County Road 22.

Minnesota Highway 1 runs from North Dakota Highway 54 at the North Dakota border (near Oslo, Minn.) and continues east to its eastern terminus at the intersection of Minnesota Highway 61 and Minnesota Highway 1 in Beaver Bay Township (near the unincorporated towns of Illgen City and Finland) on the North Shore of Lake Superior.

[edit] Termini

The eastern terminus for Minnesota 1 is its intersection with Minnesota Highway 61 in Beaver Bay Township, immediately northeast of Silver Bay on Lake Superior's North Shore.

The western terminus for Minnesota 1 is at the North Dakota border, near Oslo, Minn., where it becomes North Dakota Highway 54 at the Red River.

[edit] History

Most of Highway 1 was authorized in 1933, except for a section between U.S. 75 and Minnesota Hwy. 32 at Thief River Falls.

The route was given the Highway 1 designation because it was one of the longest trunk highways, and would allow re-use of the Route 1 markers removed from along U.S. 61 and U.S. 65 in 1934.

As recently as 1963, significant portions of Highway 1 were unpaved.

The last unpaved segment of Highway 1 was bypassed in 1996, between U.S. 53 and Minnesota 169. At that point it was swapped with paved St. Louis County Road 22.
