The Minnesota Score is a bi-monthly sports magazine based in Minnesota. It was founded in 2002 and covers Minnesota sports of all types and levels.
Its founder and publisher Wally Langfellow, is a Twin Cities based sportscaster who formerly was a sports anchor and reporter for Hubbard Broadcasting's All News Channel and was the TV host for Minnesota North Stars NHL Hockey broadcasts in the late '80s.
Much like Sports Illustrated's well known cover jinx, The Minnesota Score has had a remarkable "cover jinx" history of its own. The very first issue, published in March of 2002 featured Bloomington Jefferson boys hockey star Michael Bernhagen. Unbeknownst to the publishers, Bernhagen was dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons prior to their climb to the 2002 State Hockey Tournament semifinals, similtaneous to the release of the magazine. In August of that same year, golfer Tom Lehman, a Minnesota native, was on the cover in anticipation of the PGA Championship played that year in Minnesota. Lehman had a miserable finish at the PGA and shortly after suffered a hand injury that derailed his professional career. The Fall issue of 2002 featured then Timberwolves star Wally Szczerbiak on the cover. Szczerbiak, who had a breakthrough year for the Wolves in 2001-02 suffered an early season injury that kept him on the shelf for 30 games during the 2002-'03 season. In the Winter issue of 2003, Minnesota Wild star Marian Gaborik was on the cover. Gaborik helped lead the Wild to an unexpected appearance in the Stanley Cup semifinals in 2003. That following summer however, Gaborik held out in a contract dispute and had his worst year as a pro in 2003-04, battling inconsistency and injuries throughout the season.
