The Ministry of Higher Education (Malay: Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi) or MOHE is a government ministry that is responsible for determining the policies and direction of higher education in Malaysia.

The offices of the MOHE are located in Putrajaya.

The functions of the MOHE was originally within the purview of the Ministry of Education (MOE) until the departments and agencies responsible for higher education were separated from the MOE on March 27, 2004 and established as a full ministry under a Federal Minister.

To turn Malaysia into a center of excellence for higher education.

[edit] Mission

To develop and put in place a higher education environment that encourages the growth of premier knowledge centers and individuals who are competent, innovated with high moral values in order to meet national and international needs.

The MOHE is headed by the Minister of Higher Education, a post currently held by Mohamed Khaled Nordin (UMNO). He is assisted by two Deputy Ministers, currently Idris bin Haji Haron (UMNO) and Hou Kok Choong (MCA).

The following departments and agencies are under the purview of the MOHE:

[edit] Institutes of Higher Education Management Department

Also known by its Malay acronym, JPIPT (for Jabatan Pengurusan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi), the department is headed by a Director General, currently Radin Umar bin Radin Sohadi. This department is responsible for the management of both public and private institutes of higher learning.

[edit] Polytechnic and Community College Management Department

Also know by its Malay acronym, JPPKK (for Jabatan Pengurusan Politeknik dan Kolej Komuniti), the department is headed by a Director General, currently Imran bin Idris. This department is responsible for the management of both polytechnics and community colleges.

[edit] Malaysian Qualifications Agency

The Malaysian Qualifications Agency or MQA is a statutory body in Malaysia set up to accredit academic programs provided by educational institutions providing post secondary or higher education and facilitate the recognition and articulation of qualifications.

[edit] Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional

Better known as PTPTN (English: National Higher Education Fund Corporation), this agency provides education loans as a form of financial assistance to students with financial needs in order to aid them in pursuing a higher education. PTPTN also manages a students savings scheme for higher education purposes [1].

[edit] Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation

The foundation (Malay: Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman) is named after the first Prime Minister of Malaysia and founder of the foundation, Tunku Abdul Rahman. It provides scholarships for students to pursue a higher education. Students who are awarded the scholarships are known as Tunku Scholars [2].

The MOHE is also has oversight responsibility for all the public universities in Malaysia.
