Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (India)

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a branch of Government of India, has administrative control over the following departments.

  • Department of Health
  • Department of Family Welfare
  • Department of AYUSH

The ministry is headed by a minster of cabinet rank. As of May 2008, the minister in charge is Anbumani Ramadoss and is assisted by a Minister of State Panabaka Lakshmi.

All health related related activities are undertaken by this department. That includes various immunization campaigns, control over various bodies including national Aids Control Organization, National Health Programs, Medical Education & Training , International Cooperation in relation to Health and administers the Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation.

Some of the institutes falling under its domain are :

  • All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai(AIIPMR,Mumbai)
  • All India Institute of Speech and Hearing,Mysore

The functions of the Department includes but not limited to Maternal and *Child Health Services; Information, Education and Communication;

  • Rural Health Services; Non-Governmental Organisations sector and Technical Operations.
  • Policy Formulation, Statistics, Planning, Autonomous Bodies and Subordinate Offices;
  • Supply of Contraceptives International Assistance for Family Welfare and Urban Health Services.
  • Administration and Finance for the Departments of Health, Family Welfare

There are various research institute functioning under the department namely:-

  • Population Research Centre (18 in number)
  • National Institute of Health & Family Welfare (situated in South Delhi, JNU)
  • International Institute for Population Sciences (Mumbai, estd 1956)
  • Central Drug Research Institute (Lucknow, estd 1951)
  • Indian Council of Medical Research (one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world)

The Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH)was established in March, 1995 as the Department of Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy (ISM &H). The objectives of the department can be broadly classified into the following:-

  • To upgrade the educational standards in the Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy colleges in the country
  • To strengthen existing research institutions and ensure a time-bound research programme on identified diseases for which these systems have an effective treatment
  • To draw up schemes for promotion, cultivation and regeneration of medicinal plants used in these systems
  • To evolve Pharmacopoeial standards for Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy drugs

Various Research council under the administrative control of the Department are:

  • Central Council for Research in Ayurveda & Siddha (CCRAS)
  • Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM)
  • Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH)
  • Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN)

The Department is also concerned with the running of following educational institutions:

  • National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur (NIA)
  • National Institute of Siddha, Chennai (NIS)
  • National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkata (NIH)
  • National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune (NIN)
  • National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bangalore (NIUM)
  • Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar,Gujarat (IPGTR)
  • Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth, New Delhi (RAV)
  • Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, New Delhi (MDNIY)

The department has also under its control the PSU of Indian Medicine Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited (IMPCL), Mohan, Uttaranchal.
