The Ministry of Finance is an important ministry within the Government of India. It concerns itself with taxation, financial legislation, financial institutions, capital markets, center and state finances, and the Union Budget.
as of May 2008, Finance minister is P. Chidambaram.

The Union Finance Ministry of India comprises four departments:
- Department of Economic Affairs
- Department of Expenditure
- Department of Revenue
- Department of Disinvestments

DEA is mainly responsible for economic policies of the Government of India.

The Department of Disinvestments came into existence in December 1999 and is responsible for systematic policy approach to disinvestment and privatisation of Public Sector Units (PSUs).
