Ministry of Defence (New Zealand)

The New Zealand Ministry of Defence is the arm of the New Zealand Government charged with providing advice on defense matters, as well as providing civilian administration and oversight over the New Zealand Defence Force.

It is currently (2008) led by the Hon. Phil Goff. For a list of previous ministers, see Minister of Defence.

[edit] Responsibilities

The Ministry is responsible for the following functions:

  • Providing advise to the New Zealand Government on the Defence of New Zealand and its national interests,
  • Acquisition of Military Equipment,
  • Assessment and audit of the New Zealand Defence Force functions, duties and projects.

On a day to day basis the Secretary of Defence, (currently John McKinnon), holds the position of Chief Executive of the Ministry, and answers to the Minister.
