The Minister for the Co-ordination of Defensive Measures was created by the Ministers and Secretaries (Amendment) Act, 1939, to assist Ireland through the World War II, or The Emergency, as referred to by the Government of Ireland. The ministers functions were transferred to the Minister for Defence on abolition of the office.
Frank Aiken was the holder of the office throughout its existence. Aiken enforced stringent censorship during the The Emergency to ensure the protection of Ireland's neutrality.
