Minister for Sport and Tourism

The Minister for Sport and Tourism was a junior minister in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport of the United Kingdom government, with responsibility for sport and tourism in England. Since the 29 June 2007 reshuffle, carried out by Gordon Brown, the role has simply become that of Minister for Sport. The position is held by Gerry Sutcliffe, who replaced Richard Caborn when he took the decision to step down. ^[1].

The post is currently at Parliamentary Under Secretary of State level, and the incumbent is responsible for only the sport portfolio. The position of Minister for Sport and Tourism was previously at the more senior Minister of State level, covering both the sport and tourism portfolios. The sports minister has at various times previously reported to the Department of National Heritage, the Department for Education and Science and the Department of the Environment.

Both sport and tourism are devolved matters, with responsibility in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland resting with the corresponding ministers in the Scottish Executive and the Welsh Assembly Government, although when the Northern Ireland Assembly was suspended, responsibility went to the Northern Ireland Office.
