Mininova is one of the largest torrent listing sites. The site started in January 2005 as a successor to (at that time the very popular) Suprnova.org, which went offline at the end of 2004 due to legal issues. It is a directory and search engine for many kinds of torrent files.
Visitors of Mininova can anonymously upload torrents to this site, tracked by any BitTorrent tracker. Mininova does not allow pornographic submissions nor do they log the IP addresses of visitors. As of February 19, 2008, there are over 550,000 torrents in the Mininova database[1]. Many of the torrents contain links to copyright protected material. The word ‘mininova’ ranked 9 on Google’s list of most queried terms in 2006[2].
In April 2007, Mininova B.V. (the company running Mininova.org) won a domain dispute about the domain mininova.com, which was exploited by a phisher.
On the 18th of February, 2008, it was revealed that there have been over 4 billion downloads.[3]
The Mininova team also runs a recently created video sharing site, called Snotr. They also started to offer a content distribution service, targeted for independent content producers.
Statistics as of June 10, 2008:
- Total torrents in database: 751,486
- Total torrent downloads: 5,142,169,160
- Total seeds: 5,952,359
- Total leechers: 5,604,472
- Total number of trackers: 14,866
