miniaim

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

miniaim is a minimalist AIM client using the TOC2 protocol for windows written in C++ by Jon Honeycutt. miniaim uses only the Win32 API, which gives it its small size (currently 63.5k).

miniaim's small feature-set includes:

  • minimizing to tray
  • tabbed interface with middle click close
  • single executable (no installation needed), with optional OTR library, naturally portable
  • option to use your formatting for incoming messages
  • support for the Off-the-Record Messaging encryption library
  • ability to receive files, with or without using the AOL file transfer proxy
  • option to log conversations in html or plain text
  • saving settings to a tiny external file (miniaim.ini)
  • graphical smilies (with option to disable them)

It is rumored that Miniaim also contains a unique feature known as "clown mode", which is similar to AOL's "AIM Expressions". Although the existence of "Clown Mode" has been hinted at by creator Jon Honeycutt, how to access this feature remains a mystery among Miniaim users. Reportedly, a series of keystrokes will enable clown mode, which causes the program to play circus music as well as turning the program background to a picture of a clown. Despite rumors, no clown image or circus music is included within the miniaim executable file when it is examined with a resource editor. Also, when the file is examined with a hex editor, there seems to be no reference to any image or music file that miniaim may load from the web.
