[edit] Suggestions

Need suggestions for a final section to go alongside the Biography one. So far I'm drawing a blank.UberCryxic 23:44, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

All-right nvm I think it looks better now.UberCryxic 00:23, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Some basics

I'm hoping that this will eventually turn into a mini-Wikipedia, with editors making changes and updates at appropriate times. However, I still think we need to lay a few ground rules.....and they are:

- The Article, Biography, Picture, and Unit of the week will be replaced every week starting Monday. Obviously pictures can't be copyvios.

- No more than two entries in Upcoming dates and one in Did you know because I don't want white space at the lower right or lower left. I'm still not sure how often these two should be replaced.

- If you take out a category, make sure you put another one in its place (see second point).

- The Military history of France rocks, so make sure you're triumphalist. Victories get priorities over defeats. But still, some defeats in there are needed to balance out the coverage.

- Be careful about adding new sections. I HATE WHITE SPACES!!!

And that's it until I think of something else. Feel free to add your own rules as long as they don't contradict those above.UberCryxic 00:59, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I made the replacements early today because it was the first time and I wanted to make sure that I got the archives right (that process was a pain in the you know what).UberCryxic 18:56, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Comments on layout and stuff

A few comments about minor things :

  • I think the left column is a bit too wide, that makes the whole page sort of "lean" to the right, and makes me look for the scrollbar (though I'm seeing the full width). I think proportions more alike to that of the main page would be better. That being said, the other portals seem to be using the same proportions.
  • I find the picture of the week being centered "breaks" the layout, I would align it on the left side.
  • Maybe I'm seeing the main page too often, but I would replace "Upcoming dates" with "On this day ...".
  • White text on light blue makes it hard to read, more contrast is needed I think, either darker background, or black text. Equendil Talk 01:17, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Good points. I'm not too sure how to correct the proportions, so I will need help with that. But I'll get working on the rest.UberCryxic 01:21, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
The main page is a 55%/45%, portal was 60%40%, I've edited to 55/45, messes up a few things but nothing that can't be fixed, now the question is : is 55/45 right for this ? Equendil Talk 01:48, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I'm fine with this as long as we can add more in the This week and Did you know sections to cancel out the white space in the lower right, which is an enemy of the Republic as of this moment. I took care of your other concerns. One thing though: I think we should do This week instead of This day because it will be really hard to update that section every day. Wikipedia's coverage of French military history isn't that good. A weekly thing seems more appropriate.UberCryxic 01:52, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Aye, fair enough, no way this could be updated every day. Equendil Talk 02:31, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
All-right I guess it looks fine now; we're ready to go.UberCryxic 02:24, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
It could use a few more words as caption of the picture of the week to avoid the orphan line, but other than that, looks good to me.
One question, "more articles...", "more pictures ..." etc lead to the same subpages as is shown within the portal, do you intend to have separate "archives" pages later or ? Equendil Talk 02:31, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Yeah we're going to have separate archive pages later on. I'll worry about that next week.UberCryxic 02:43, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vive l'Empereur!

I like this new portal...There is a strong Bonapartiste presence here, so I feel right at home:> Bien fait Uber!--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 19:57, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

BTW, if you find the En:Wiki's coverage of this subject lacking, check out the Fr:Wiki. I've spoken with a number of editors over there about its sad state. Perhaps the best course of action would be to get our articles into shape, then translate them over.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 20:00, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Reminds me I need to translate some articles from wiki fr. The one article I translated from there was quite a mess though, some paragraphs made little sense even in French.

[edit] Changes

I've been getting very lazy in keeping the portal updated. From now on, anticipating that similar circumstances will accompany me in the future, the portal will feature new material for every category once every month, not every week. Thank you.UberCryxic 00:40, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
