- 1862 - Civil War: Battle of Chantilly - Confederate forces attack retreating Union troops in Chantilly, Virginia.
- 1864 - Civil War: Confederate General John Bell Hood evacuates Atlanta, Georgia after a four-month siege by General Sherman.
- 1939 - George C. Marshall becomes Chief of Staff of the United States Army.
- 1951 - The United States, Australia and New Zealand sign a mutual defense pact, called the ANZUS Treaty.
- 1971 - The Senate rejects the McGovern-Hatfield Amendment, setting a deadline for withdrawal of American troops from South Vietnam.
- 1974 - The SR-71 Blackbird sets (and holds) the record for flying from New York to London: 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds.

- 1862 - Civil War: President Abraham Lincoln restores Union General George McClellan to full command after General John Pope's disastrous defeat at the Battle of Second Bull Run.
- 1864 - Civil War: Union forces enter Atlanta, Georgia a day after the Confederate defenders flee the city.
- 1925 - The U.S. Zeppelin the USS Shenandoah crashes, killing 14.
- 1945 - World War II ends: The final official surrender of Japan is accepted aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
- 1958 - USAF C-130A-II is shot down by fighters over Yerevan, Armenia when it strays into Soviet airspace.

- 1777 - Cooch's Bridge - Skirmish of American Revolutionary war in New Castle County, Delaware where the Flag of the United States was flown in battle for the first time.
- 1783 - Revolution: The war ends with the signing of the Treaty of Paris by the United States and the Kingdom of Great Britain.
- 1826 - The USS Vincennes commanded by William Finch, leaves New York City to become first United States warship to circumnavigate the globe.
- 1855 - Indian Wars: In Nebraska, 700 soldiers under American General William S. Harney avenge the Grattan Massacre by attacking a Sioux village.
- 1861 - Civil War: Confederate General Leonidas Polk invades neutral Kentucky, prompting the state legislature to ask for Union assistance.

- 1976 - Cold War: Soviet air force pilot Lt. Viktor Belenko lands a MiG-25 jet fighter at Hakodate on the island of Hokkaidō in Japan and requests political asylum in the United States.

- 1776 - World's first submarine attack: the American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British HMS Eagle in New York Harbor.

- 1923 - Honda Point Disaster: Nine US Navy destroyers run aground off the California coast. Seven are lost.
- 1943 - World War II: The O.B.S. (German General Headquarters for the Mediterranean zone) in Frascati was bombed by USAAF.

- 2001 - The September 11 attacks destroy the World Trade Center in New York City, part of The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and crash a passenger airliner in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In total, almost 3,000 are killed.

- 1847 - Mexican-American War: The Battle of Chapultepec begins. U.S. Army deserters in the Saint Patrick's Battalion who fought alongside the Mexican army are hanged en masse for treason by the order of General Winfield Scott.
