- 1943 - World War II: Australian and American forces begin attack on Sanananda during the Battle of Buna-Gona.
- 1988 - Captain PJ McCarthy was killed whilst on duty the UNTSO Observer Group in Lebanon becoming the first Australian Serviceman to die whilst serving with the United Nations.
