Vercingetorix surrenders to Julius Caesar after the Battle of Alesia in 52 BC. After years of brutal fighting across all of the territory encompassed by modern-day France, the Roman victory at Alesia marked the effective end of Gallic resistance and made Caesar a hero to his countrymen. Painting by Lionel-Noël Royer, 1899.
