The victory at the Battle of Foochow in 1884 settled the Sino-French War in French favor. Admiral Amédée Courbet led the attack against the anchored and unsuspecting Chinese fleet. The Chinese suffered nearly 1,000 casualties and had about 20 ships sunk or damaged. The outcome facilitated the eventual establishment of French Indochina.
