Million Woman March

The Million Woman March was a protest march organized on March 25, 1997, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was organized by Phile Chionesu, a grassroots activist, and Asia Coney. The march was intended to help bring social and economic unity throughout the black communities of the United States. Speakers at the event included Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the ex-wife of Nelson Mandela. Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa Parks were also announced as speakers at one point, but were not present at the event.

Estimates of attendance vary widely. The Philadelphia police gave no official estimates, but were preparing for up to 600,000 marchers[1]. Police sources gave numbers varying from 300,000 to 1,5 million.[2]Organizers estimated an attendance of 2.1 million[3]. Phile Chionesu suggested there was more than a million people.[2]
