Millidgeville, New Brunswick
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Millidgeville is a Canadian neighbourhood in the city of Saint John, New Brunswick.
Millidgeville is situated on the northern edge of the city, along the Kennebecasis River at the point where that westerly flowing river meets the southerly flowing Saint John River.
The community took its name from Thomas Millidge who operated a shipyard in the area.
The community was largely a cottaging area for Saint John residents until the advent of post-World War II suburban development. Millidgeville typically experiences less coastal fog than the main part of the city. For this reason, it was home to the city's main airport until after the war, when the property was converted to residential and commercial development.
Today, Millidgeville is an affluent middle-class neighbourhood which is home to the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Saint John campus in the Tucker Park development, as well as the province's largest hospital, the Saint John Regional Hospital. Amenities include Rockwood Park, one of Canada's largest urban parks, which helps to separate Millidgeville from the city proper, as well as the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club (RKYC).
