Mille (woreda)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mille is one of the 29 woredas in the Afar Region of Ethiopia. It is named for the Mille River, a tributary of the Awash River, which flows through this woreda. On 4 February 2007, the Afar Regional Cabinet approved the division of this woreda, creating a new woreda out of the western part, with its administrative center to be at Hadar.[1]
Part of the Administrative Zone 1, Mille is bordered on the south by the Administrative Zone 3, on the southwest by Administrative Zone 5, on the west by the Amhara Region, on the northwest by Chifra, on the northeast by Dubti, and on the east by the Oromia Region. Towns in Mille include Mille and Eli Wuha.
The highest point in this woreda is Mount Gabillema (1459 meters), a dormant volcano in the southeastern part. An important local landmarks include the Yangudi Rassa National Park, which covers the southeast corner of Mille, but not Mount Gabillema; and the archeological site at Hadar.
Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 88,081, of whom 39,556 were males and 48,525 were females; 5,787 or 6.57% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 14.9%. Information is not available for the area of Mille, so its density cannot be calculated.[2]
