"Milkshake" is an R&Belectro song written and produced by The Neptunes for American singer Kelis' third studio album Tasty (2003). The song was released as the album's first single. It reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, Australia and the Netherlands. In the United States, "Milkshake" became Kelis' biggest success to date on Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number three. The song is Kelis' biggest hit worldwide, peaking at number four on the United World Chart with more than two million points.

In the United Kingdom, "Milkshake" has become the biggest hit of Kelis' career, staying at number two on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks and selling 225,000 copies.

The song earned Kelis a Grammy Award nomination in 2004, in the category "Best Urban/Alternative Performance".

On February 7, 2007, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart jokingly reported that "Milkshake" had been chosen as the campaign song of Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.[1]

During the song's release, Mad magazine made merciless fun of it for several issues.

The original song was used in the following comedy films: Mean Girls (2004), Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004), Date Movie (2006), and Norbit (2007).

In 2006, CKE Restaurants used an edited version of the song in commercials for Hardee's and Carl's Jr. milkshakes.

The daytime soap opera General Hospital featured a storyline involving an audition for a recording contract at L & B Records. The storyline featured American Idol judge Randy Jackson. Every person who auditioned would sing the song, including an opera singer.

In the fourth season of the animated series Family Guy, in the episode "Sibling Rivalry", it featured Peter Griffin shirtless, squeezing his pecs together and singing the song to entertain the prisoners who were surrounding him.

In an episode of the sitcom According to Jim, Jim's overweight brother-in-law, Andy, comes in wearing a tight-fitting wardrobe, consisting of an orange top and black tights. When Jim questions this apparel choice, Andy responds "this milkshake brings all the girls to the yard".

Mia Fey from the video game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations said, "We all know whose milkshake brings the boys to the yard" referring how Dahlia Hawthorne had Winston Payne and the Judge at her mercy with her beauty.

The Ugly Betty episode "A Nice Day for a Posh Wedding" features MODE recptionist Amanda Tanen (Sommers) singing "Milkshake" at Bradford Meade and Wilhelmina Slater's wedding.

The song was also used in a popular internet meme, following the release of Paul Thomas Anderson's film There Will Be Blood, in which scenes from the film were edited to the song (most notably the film's famous "I drink your milkshake" scene).

  • Los Angeles-based indie pop band Buddy recorded a reworked, acoustic version of the song on their 2005 EP, Buddy. It found a home on college radio, and was featured on an NPR segment on unique cover songs.
  • The song "Better Than Yours" by Kanye West samples the beat of "Milkshake".
  • Publisher McSweeney's published a series of 'Short Imagined Monologues' including an aging Kelis reflecting on the song and some of its consequences.
  • Dublin band "First Death in Nova Scotia" played a hardcore version of the song in their earlier days.

"Milkshake" debuted at number ninety-five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, Kelis' second entry on the Hot 100 after her debut single, "Caught out There", in 1999. It peaked at number three for five consecutive weeks, becoming Kelis' highest charting single in the U.S., and was later certified gold by the RIAA for sales in excess of 500,000.

In the UK, "Milkshake" debuted and peaked at number two, her highest charting single there; it stayed there for four consecutive weeks and sold over 225,000 copies. In Ireland, it reached number one for five consecutive weeks and was the year's fourth highest selling single. The single peaked at number two for five consecutive weeks in Australia, was certified platinum by the ARIA and was the year's fourth highest selling single.

"Milkshake" also reached number three in New Zealand, the top ten in Sweden and the Netherlands, and the top forty in Germany, France, Canada and Switzerland. It is Kelis' most successful single internationally.
