Military organization (BattleTech)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Note: The following military organization tables is mostly a formal format, due to the use of combined-armed tactics. All unit organization is formatted to show grouping name and number of units, both of smaller groups and total number of units that form the Squad, Platoon, Lance, etc, etc.

[edit] Inner Sphere House Unit Organization

Despite differences in politics, culture, and religion, the Houses of the Inner Sphere at the root base of each TO&E of each House is the same basic unit structure. Though each separate House differ from each in slightly in almost every aspect, each house originally based their structure of military forces based of the Star League's own unit organization. Such conformity has enabled writers and readers alike to be able to calculate force numbers, and better understand the tactical situation within the story without having to know several different tables of originations.

[edit] Mercenary Military Unit Organization

Most mercenary commanders having either worked for one or more of the Great Houses or even were part of a Houses military, most mercenary units use a modified TO&E based on the Houses' unit organizational structure. But for mercenaries such as the Wolf's Dragoons, and other Clan-derived mercenary forces structure their units more as the Clans. A few merc commands that derive solely from the periphery realms use the same organization as their home nations, which rarely exceed a company or in rare chances a battalion in strength, and often field over-strength companies to give themselves an advantage against the regimental strength forces commonly used by Inner Sphere and Clan forces. A common tactic of some mercenaries is to restructure their forces to take advantage of Clan honor rules. However, such attempts usually have little effect in the field because the Clans regard mercenaries as mere criminals and treat them as such.

Infantry The standard base unit of an infantry unit is the squad usually numbered aroud 7 troops, at most times in a combined forces most of the infantry detactments are usually at command level are etheir company or Battalion strength. It is very rare to find an entire infantry force under a single single command at regimental stregth.

  • Platoon  : 4 Squads (28 troops)
  • Company  : 3 Platoons (84 troops)
  • Battalion  : 3 Companies (252 troops)

Battle Armor Just as their unarmored version aattle armor infantry base unit is also the squad but usually this about four persons instead, also usually most units at best feild a companies worth of aattle armor usuallya platoon or less is detachted to most sub-commands within the perant command

  • Squad  : (4 troops)
  • Platoon  : 3 BA Squads (12 troops)

Armor Covering every vehicle not a walking titan armored forces basic unit is te Lance roughly four vehicles, due to most tanks being cheaper than batlemechs and much eaisier to feild and sustain most commands sustain several companies or battalions on a regular basis. In most planetary militias most of their comabt capebality is in armored support vehicles.

  • Lance  : (4 Vehicles)
  • Company  : 3 Lances (12 Vehicles)
  • Battalion  : 3 Companies (36 Vehicles)
  • Regiment  : 3 Battalions (108 Vehicles)

BattleMech as the walking tians of the modern times even a single batlemech puts fear into a mans heart just with it being insight, the base unit of a formation is a lance totaly of four battlemechs. Most houses frontline commands normally weild several battalions or even regiments of battlemechs. Only in frontline units does single command feild such large numbers of battlemechs at once most other units command companies of second-rate mechs at best.

  • Wing  : 3 Squadrons (18 Aerospace Fighters)
  • Regiment  : 3 Companies (54 Aerospace Fighters)

[edit] Clan Unit Organization

After the first Exodus, the SLDF forces, that fled the chaos of the Succesion Wars, at first used the standard unit organization; but during the Second Exodus, Nicholas Kerensky having completely changed the culture and lifestyle of his followers as he shaped them into the original Warrior caste. He proclaimed that the old use of the old unit origniazation was the down fall of the Inner Sphere and the dream that was his fathers; so whin the clans were formed form then on units would be derived from elements called Points; these representing the minimum effective number of each kind of warrior caste (infantry, BattleMech pilot, etc.). Points being organized in groups of five called Stars, equivalent to a Lance, which in turn formed higher-level organizations. [1]

From a game balance standpoint, the Clan organizational structure allows BattleTech players to quickly assemble a balanced game of two Inner Sphere Lances (8 mechs) versus a Star of Clan forces (5 mechs). Superior Clan technology makes up for the difference in numbers, assuming similar weight classes of typical Mechs.

[edit] ComStar and Word of Blake Unit Organization

Just as the Clans use an idiosyncratic organizational structure based on five-Point Stars, ComStar's military arm, the Com Guards (and its splinter faction, the Word of Blake), base their organization on multiples of six. The ComGuards, ComStar's military branch, and the Word of Blake Militia share a common heritage and organization. Both militaries use combined arms tactics and a simplistic command structure to minimize the effects of the loss of an upper command echelon. Neither the Word of Blake Militia nor the Com Guards use a formal organization above Level 4.

  • Level 1: a single BattleMech, armored vehicle or aerospace fighter, or single infantry squad
  • Level 2: six Level 1 units; referred to as a demi-company.
  • Level 3: six Level 2 units; referred to as a battalion.
  • Level 4: six Level 3 units; referred to as a division.
  • Level 5: six Level 4 units; referred to as an Army. Mostly an administrative grouping, they were deployed as field units only at Tukayyid.
  • Level 6: six level 5 units; almost completely absent from ComGuard military organization, however the first deployment charts for the ComGuards in the Twenty Year Update included Theaters.
