Military Museum of Finland

The Military Museum of Finland (Sotamuseo in Finnish) is the central museum of the Finnish Defence Forces and the national special museum of military history. It is located in Helsinki and it is part of the Finnish National Defence University.

The Military Museum was founded 25.11.1929. The opening ceromony was held in Liisankatu 1, Kruununhaka 18.10.1930. In 1933 the exhibition was moved to Suomenlinna. During the second world war 1939-45 the museum was closed to the public. The museum was opened to the public again 1948 in Kruununhaka. The Military Museum is located in a garrison building designed by Evert Lagerspetz in 1883.

The Military Museum collects, preserves, researches and displays artefacts and other heritage related to the Defence Forces of Finland, to military history and to the history of weaponry.

The collections of the Military Museum cover over 200 000 artefacts. Most artefacts are organized in research collections or stored.
[edit] Permanent exhibition
The Military Museum's permanent exhibition displays Finnish military history since the beginnign of the fifteenth century. The main focus is in the 19th century.
[edit] Submarine Vesikko and Manage
The Military Museum has in the summer time two exhibitions open in Suomenlinna. Submarine Vesikko is a Finnish submarine built in 1933 that served in the second World War in the gulf of Finland. After the war it was renovated and opened to the public 9.7.1973. In the Manege is on display equipment from the second world war. It was opened to the public 1.6.1989.

In June 2008 opens a new exhibition in Helsinki that depicts the Finnish military for the past ninety years. It is focused on the experience of a common soldier in the Finnish army.
