Milford High School, a member of the Huron Valley School District, includes grades 9-12 and is located in Highland, Michigan, in Oakland County, Michigan. The athletic teams were originally called the Trojans when the school was located in Downtown Milford, Michigan. Later the teams were renamed to the Redskins. Ultimately, the mascot was changed to the Mavericks during the 2002-2003 school year. The new athletic team name—the Mavericks—was adopted after a school-wide vote, with little input from alumni or the community.
The school colors are officially Cardinal Red and white; however, other colors have been featured prominently in athletic uniforms over the years, including maroon, gold, silver and black. It was founded in 1869.
Historically, Milford has a tradition of fine athletics; however, during the late 1980's and through the 1990's Milford consistently enjoyed championships in a variety of sports. This trend started when the baseball team finished as state runners up in 1989. In 1989/90 the mens basketball team had an undefeated regular season, and finished 23-1 (That team also featured 5 starters with a GPA above 3.75). The 1990's also produced several All-State Cross Country and Track athletes, along with Milford's first a state championship in Equestrian.
Recently. the football team, after many years of mediocrity, is now considered one of the most prominent in the Kensington Valley Conference (KVC), which contains schools around southeastern Michigan. Milford lost in the elite 8 of the MSHAA Division 1 Football playoffs to Rockford High School 21-14. The Varsity Girls Bowling team was first place in their conference for 5 years in a row. In 2005, the team took first place in the state of Michigan in the Class A division. Milford has consistently been a Track & Field and Cross Country powerhouse. Consistently producing the area's top distance runners. Recently the boys Milford High School Cross Country Team has also won two, back-to-back division 1 state championships (2003 and 2004).
The surrounding area's growth has allowed Milford (and sister school Lakeland) to expand the athletics programs further in recent years. After adding a large field house and pool complex, Milford now has a competitive swim and dive team. Milford offers Varsity Sports letters in a very wide range of sports including: Baseball, Football, Basketball, Softball, Track and Field, Cross Country, Wrestling, Ice Hockey (Mens), Volleyball (Womens), Golf, Soccer, Ski, Lacrosse, Tennis, Bowling, Gymnastics, Equestrian and the new Swim teams.
Milford also has many other strong extra-curricular activities. The school's business oriented club, DECA, is also very successful with many of its students reaching national competitions. The H.O.T. (Heroes of Tomorrow) robotics team, with the extensive help of General Motors engineers, finished first at the 2005 FIRST robotics competition Championship Event. This team is a combination team between students from Milford and Lakeland High School, the other main high school within Huron Valley. The Milford High School Marching Band has had many finishes in regional and national levels.
For years, the Milford High Vocal Ensemble (later renamed to Center Stage), was an elite high-school show choir directed by James Cutty. The Vocal Ensemble, sung at a variety of national and international venues over the years. The program lost most of its luster after Mr. Cutty retired from teaching in 2002.
Its current principal as of September 2006 is Mr. Krystyniak.
Milford offers a wide variety of AP courses ranging from AP US History for sophomores to AP Physics for seniors. Students taking the courses rarely do well on the AP testing, having only received 6 scores of 4 or higher in the last year.
